  • Download Streamed Videos in Many Apps With This New Free Jailbreak Application

Video downloading is one of the most demanded features of video streaming services such as YouTube. Unfortunately, the services do not offer this functionality to users and it is up to third party developers to create options for users. That’s exactly what this new free application will do for you.

Dubbed Universal Video Downloader by Harrison Apps, LLC, the application will allow you to download streamed videos in many different video streaming applications from the App Store. It also works in Google’s own YouTube application for iOS, or from Web applications in Mobile Safari.

As shown above, one simply needs to load a video in a video streaming application such as the YouTube application (which we will use for this tutorial) and the tweak will automatically detect that you’re starting a video and ask you if you want to download the video. You can tap Download to download the video, or tap dismiss to simply watch the video and not download it. If you tap Download, you'll start going through the download process, which begins with asking you what you want to name the video:

After you have entered the name that you will use to identify the video, you can tap on the Download button in the top right-hand corner of the application. After doing that, the application will start processing the download and begin the download with a live download indicator showing the megabytes downloaded out of the full file-size. For larger videos, processing the download will take longer. Each video must process before it can download:

If you noticed that this interface looks different than the YouTube application, that’s because it is. Universal Video Downloader adds a new application icon to your home screen. You will be able to watch and manage your downloaded videos from this application. As shown above in the download manager, a badge will appear on the downloads tab of the application with the number of downloads occurring.

After the video downloads are all finished, you can simply move over to the Videos tab of the application and you’ll find your downloaded videos. You can tap on any of them to play the videos right from the application with the built-in video player.

The application also comes with a Settings and Apps tab. From the Apps tab, you can select the applications that you want Universal Video Downloader to attempt to download videos from when you start watching videos. You can enable the “Enable All Apps” switch and the application will display the alert in every application you stream videos through. If you disable this feature, you will be able to manually select the applications one-by-one that you want the alert to pop up in. This feature may be useful if you never plan to download media from one application, but plan to download media in another application all the time since you won’t want to see the rather annoying popup in applications that you never plan to download media from.

From the settings tab, you can manage video download quality, manage the default audio for a video, choose to continue watching a video where you left off after it downloads, and enable or disable download alerts. The download alerts are rather useful because in the event that you download a large video and don't want to sit there and wait for it, you can do other things and the application will let you know when the download is finished.

The ability to download videos from a video streaming application is useful because you can download videos to watch on the go from your home Wi-Fi network and never worry about eating up your limited data plans while abroad. It also gives people without cellular service a way to watch these videos offline.

Universal Video Downloader is compatible with many applications, but just be aware that it won’t work with all of them. The developer states in the Cydia description that the application cannot download files specified in QuickTime reference movies and that some applications come with their own custom video players that may not be compatible with Universal Video Downloader. This is unfortunately a flip of the coin that the user will have to deal with, but the tweak is free so there’s nothing to lose by giving it a try.

Users can remove the videos from the video library of the application whenever they want to, but unfortunately the application doesn’t come with any importing options to add the videos to the iOS device’s media applications.

If you want to be able to download streamed videos from sites like YouTube on your iOS device for free, then Universal Video Downloader is something you have got to check out. Remember to exercise video downloading with caution, as some video content is protected by copyright laws – you should always get permission from the video owner to download the content before doing so.

Yes. It will calculate the size and depending on how large the video is, it may take a little while. You just need to keep waiting.

A 150MB YouTube video I tried to download took around 6 minutes to "calculate the size."
A 23MB YouTube video I tried to download took around 1 minute to "calculate the size."

Using this scale, anything bigger or smaller in size would take longer or shorter respectively. It's perfectly normal.

So this site chastises people for talking about stealing apps and such but then promotes a program allowing people to download copyrighted videos?

      Yep, seems logical.

Indeed it does download netflix video.

Problem is, the netflix video is still in tiny chunks and presumably still encrypted.... The app's built in player will play it just fine, but if you intend to download it off your iPhone and try to watch it on your computer you will be disappointed .. Unless someone has a method for playing them that I'm unaware of =)

Netflix video downloads include a crypt key and some m3u8 playlists.. I tried to play with iTunes just as an experiment but it failed.

I can confirm that the built in video player works fine even with internet disabled.. so obviously universal video downloader knows how to play the content =) ..

If it works with Netflix it clearly isn't legal but a nice tweak for sure...

Actually, it is perfectly legal as long as you don't sell or distribute.
No different then using a DVR or VHS recorder at home.

So if I were to download everything that is on Netflix while I have my free months trial and then cancel that would somehow be legal?

Perfectly legal for your own use. Law set in the early 80's when Hollywood went after SONY's BetaMax. SONY won.
