  • Meet Apple's New 'iPad Mini'

As universally expected today, Apple unveiled the iPad mini just moments after the curtain was similarly raised for the 4th generation iPad.

Consistent with the rumor mill this summer, the iPad mini is a pint-sized powerhouse of an Apple tablet that delivers a 7.9" display and is just 7.2mm thin. The price, however, is a bit higher than some had hoped. The new iPad mini starts at $329 for the Wi-Fi only, 16 GB model. The cellular version starts at $459.

The iPad mini is less than half the weight of the last iPad and weighs just 0.68 pounds with its pencil-thin frame. As expected, the iPad mini comes in both black and white.

The iPad mini packs an A5 chip, the much-desired FaceTime HD camera, 5-megapixel iSight camera, LTE connectivity and super speedy Wi-Fi. Per the new Apple playbook of installed features, the iPad mini comes with the Lightning connector and even matches the 10-hour battery life of the 4th generation iPad announced just moments ago.

Preorders for the iPad mini start this Friday with WiFi versions shipping first.

HAHAHAHAHA....that so looks like current gen Samsung phones. But you watch, Apple will claim Samsung copied them way before this POS was even released.

Right, just like the iPad 2 couldn't of right? Instead, at a higher price point, the kindle limped along I'm compare to iPad sales. Learn your facts.

The mini is too expensive... Here I was hoping for a cheater price. Like someone said, apple wouldn't sell it cheaper than an ipod touch...

oh man it still has a 4:3 resolution screen?? 1024x768 means it can't even do 720p true HD (1280x720) content without scaling. Any 16:9 content will have to be scaled to 1024x576. Lame.

At least the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 both have 1280x800 displays, so 16:9 content can be shown at 1280x720, with no scaling if it's 720p content.

Seems a bit over priced if you ask me ... not impressed.. I'd just shell out and get a full ipad..

If they priced it right they would wipe out the competitors completely

Sorry Apple, you completely missed the boat on this one. $70 more then the Nexus with a ******** screen and less powerful cpu. Good luck finding someone to buy your overstock.

Pricing seems off to me. I understand the need to price it above a ipod touch, but they should of went a bit lower with it. The ipad dominated due to a great price that no one could compete with for almost two years after it was released. Same with the macbook air, competitors are still taking a loss trying to make a ultra book that can compete.

Not having a retnia display, a lesser processor and less ram than the competitors with a higher price. I think will hurt sales that would of been a slam dunk with a little bit better specs and price. I feel if Steve Jobs was still around this would of never seen the light of day. He was not into fragmented markets sales. This was talked about heavily in his book. I hope Apple stays on course and doesn't decide to follow market trend, but yet chooses to set the trend like have been doing in years past. I love my apple products, and wouldn't trade them for anything. But product releases like this worry me about the future of apple.
