  • Apple Rumored to be working on Cloud-Based iWork Suite

According to CRN, people who are familiar with the project claim that Apple is reportedly working with VMware to bring a cloud-based, business oriented version of its iWork suite of apps to the iPad, with the partnership said to be directed squarely at Microsoft’s rumored release of Office for the iOS platform. The Cupertino California company is probably looking to undercut Microsoft’s high Microsoft Office pricing by offering a cloud-hosted version of Apple’s iWork suite, which includes Pages, Keynote, and Numbers.

One of the sources said that "Apple wants Pages to be seen as a replacement for Microsoft Word, Numbers as a replacement for Excel and Keynote as a replacement for PowerPoint.” The system is said to be incorporated with VMware View virtual desktop software with cloud versions of Pages, Keynotes, and Numbers, which will be running on Apple’s servers. An interesting thing about the service is that it will be separate from iCloud, which currently hosts “Document in the Cloud” for syncing and downloading files between iOS and OS X devices.

Up until now, iWork has traditionally been aimed at consumers but the rumored partnership could yield a totally separate offering for enterprise class customers, with the cloud-based software offering a more powerful set of features when compared to iCloud. The rumored suite might end p being a central hub for business customers are the two companies are looking to leverage Horizon Mobile, VMware’s software that allows personal and business apps and data to be stored on two different partitions, which would help alleviate IT concerns.

No time frame has been given by the source although it is suspected that the project may come to fruition before the release of Microsoft’s Office for iOS.

Of course they are. Micro$oft are doing a cloud based Office so Apple have to copy and do their own cloud based Office.

More proof Apple don't have an original idea in their own little world.

Or they're finally fully utilizing iCloud, albeit calling it something else. You are so quick to point fingers.

Well with everything else going cloud-based they really need to in order to stay competitive.

That said, they will never really be a full replacement for Office, but it can be a very good, cost-effective option for people on tighter budgets. MS really does charge a bit high for Office, but they get away with it because they pretty much own the market.

Microsoft didn't create this idea either.

It was obviously Android that did. Because they have started every good idea under the sun. Android has also: stopped global starvation, initiated world peace, and cured cancer. Thank you, Google.

I thought Facebook stopped all these global problems? You mean to tell me liking and sharing all those photos did nothing!?

      ^^

Cloud based technology originates from the Internet as in, emails, social networking, etc.

These are the first forms of cloud, however the reason it's different is because you own part of that server you aren't just given it for free.

I'm all for pointing out a copied idea, but Software as a Service is nothing new. If Apple decides to make iWork a SAAS, it will be about the millionth company to do something similar. You can claim that Apple has no original ideas all day long, but it doesn't change the fact that they essentially created the tablet and smartphone markets.
