  • Apple Closer Than Ever to Cutting All Ties with Samsung

To say that Apple and Samsung have a contentious relationship would be the understatement of the century. Further illustrating the bad blood between the two tech titans, on Monday a new report out of Asia addressed Apple's compounding desire to cut all ties with Samsung.

As MMi has reported in recent weeks, Apple is said to be interested in eliminating its reliance on Samsung for the manufacturing of its mobile processors. "According to industry sources," the Korea Times published Monday, "Apple has not collaborated with Samsung in the process to develop its A6 microprocessor used in its latest iPhone 5."

In the old days, Samsung handled the manufacturing of the processors used in earlier model iPhones. But it's now safe to say that this trend will not remain in the months and years to come.

Apple is still relying on the Korean firm to manufacture its chips but has made it clear it will no longer use its rivalís technology, according to a senior Samsung official.
"Samsungís agreement with Apple is limited to manufacturing the A6 processors. Apple did all the design and we are just producing the chips on a foundry basis," the source confirmed.

For now, all signs point to Apple developing its relationship with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) for the purpose of phasing out Samsung altogether in this role.

Yeah, cut ALL ties.... including the all the other goodies (like the Samsung HD's they use in their laptop/desktops, the memory they use in their Mini's - both sticks in mine came from Samsung -, and any other associated chipsets that are produced by Samsung they use). They will have to phase it in, and in some cases some of the materials may not be of the same quality/performance.

Yep, and Apple will also have it's day at the chopping block. It's not the company (as far as product goes) that it used to be. It's beginning to rest on it's laurels. Look at how long it's been since the Mini or the iMac has had a refresh.

only way companies as big as samsung die is from unethical business practices and accounting procedures, often coupled with ineffective internal controls...as long as they keep up with changing technology, samsung will be here for a long, long time

Seriously, Samsung is way too big to just be "killed" off by Apple. They make too many things, you can also add Samsung Heavy Industries that has a global market share of 61% to the list. I didn't even know Samsung was in that business

People used to say the same about Nokia once upon a time. (during iphone 1 and 2 launch). Now look at where it is. Samsung can be killed. the parts they supply to apple can be manufactured by anybody. (sharp and panasonic primarily) they've lost a billion dollars plus business.

If it wasn't for Samsung they wouldn't have an iPhone at all.
They just dont want to pay Samsung for their services. First they get them to make the iPhones, then sue them for a lot more than those parts cost so in the end you get them all made for free.
Now that they've had some time to find someone else to make the parts they sue them, then cut all ties with them.

So, instead of making a better device they kill the competition.
Never give away your trumph card to anyone. Samsung has made that mistake and they suffered for it. Samsung never gave them the iphone btw. and even if they did that was their biggest mistake.

Last time I checked Nokia did not manufacture heavy equipment nor household items. The electronics division is just ONE part of Samsung.

Kinda hard to kill a business with their finger in that many pies.
