  • iPod Touch 5G is Much Less Powerful Than iPhone 5

Updated Geekbench benchmarks show that Apple’s new fifth-generation iPod touch is much less powerful than the iPhone 5. The iPod touch 5G has Apple’s older A5 chip and the iPhone 5 has apple’s brand new A6 chip, but another interesting point is that the iPod touch 5G shows a lower score than the iPhone 4S, which uses the same A5 chip.

The iPhone 5’s A6 chip is clocked at 1.3Ghz, as ModMyi reported in September, which is a great improvement over the iPod touch 5G’s 800Mhz A5 chip. The new speeds paired together with a better chip means more power. Apple claims their new A6 chip can deliver two times the performance of the previous A5 chip.

As we analyze the Geekbench scores, the iPhone 5 brings a whopping 1572 (GSM) and 1573 (CDMA), completely outdoing every other iOS device Apple has ever launched. The iPod touch 5G scores a puny 619, lower than the iPhone 4S at 654. It’s absolutely safe to say that the A6 chip is two times faster than the A5 chip… and then some. As TUAW points out, some of the added power is because of the additional memory in the newer devices.

If you have the iPod touch 4G as your current iPod touch, the iPod touch 5G is an improvement. The iPod touch 4G with its mere single-core A4 processor scores only a 377, which is just a little over half as powerful. The second core in the iPod touch 5G definitely helps out a bunch.

You can obtain your own benchmarks by downloading the 99˘ Geekbench app from the App Store. (link)

Surely the iPod Touch 5 should be compared to the iPhone 4S, given that they have the same processor?!

I don't know why Apple would launch a new phone that performed worse than the previous version.

A better word might be attributed. Blamed seems to make it sound like it's a bad thing.

Did you do anything special for that score?

Of course they won't make iPod touch parallel to iPhone. iPhone has A6 because it obviously process more than ipod touch.

The iPod touch 4G carried the same A4 chip at the same clock speed of the iPhone 4. The only difference was actually the memory, which was doubled in the iPhone.

I think this iPod touch should have come out last year with the iPhone 4S, but the iPod touch 4G lasted a good two years.

I would say the reason to use a slower processor is to give themselves more profit by using last year's tech, not because the iPod Touch doesn't require as much processing power.

I wonder how fast & what chip the 'supposed' iPad mini will have. Might be the end of the iPod Touch...

Also, don't forget that they would rather have someone buy an iPhone over an iPod Touch in the first place.

It only makes sense that it wouldn't be as good or close to the iPhone 5. If there was an iPod that would be close to it it would be the iPod Touch...it is just the Nano after-all...!

I think Apple is really trying to separate the iPhone and iPod Touch. A lot of people often have a hard time deciding between the two believe it or not.

I could really care less about some stupid program that gives some lame *** score

What I do care about is real world performance in games and apps etc...

iPod touch makes a great present for the kids and as long as it can play all the new games etc in the iTunes Store that's all that matters

I could care less about some geek bench score as that is no way useful to me...

I do love my iPhone 5 and I am thinking of getting the new iPod touch
