New Nokia Commercial Bashes iPhone's Lack of Color
Nokia recently released a new commercial that attacks Apple’s new iPhone, with the focus on the iPhone 5’s lack of color options. This is quite different from Samsung’s campaign, which tends to make fun of those who wait on lines and the general lifestyle of iPhone users. What seems to be a bit strange here is that Nokia seems to be focusing in on what seems like a largely irrelevant feature as opposed to touting the features its flagship Lumia 920 totes.
As pointed out by The Verge,
the “Time to #switch” commercial portrays a rather boring life that iPhone upgraders live. It conveys a monotonous two-toned feel as an early-adopter who goes to purchase an iPhone asks what colors he has to chose from. When asked this question, the staff at the Apple retail outlet appears to be angered as alarms and buzzers go off, causing the main character to run outside where he sees people carrying the Lumia 920 in various bright colors.
The advertisement ends with the “This is Lumia” tagline with a picture of the Windows Phone 8 device next to it. Nokia even attempts to utilize a social media aspect into their messaging by promoting the Twitter hashtag #switch. Although the Samsung commercials seemed to have their own place when it came to messaging and hilarity, I don’t think Nokia’s message makes their phone stand out. Although color may be part of the decision making process when it comes to purchasing a device, it doesn't seem anywhere near as important as the technical features a device packs.
