  • iOS 6 Not Completely 'Friendly' to Visually, Hearing Impaired

iOS 6 was launched last week to dramatic fanfare. But some of the refreshed components of the Apple ecosystem aren't being praised by individuals with disabilities.

Recently, the folks at AppleVis.com - a site covering software for visually impaired users - addressed problems with the iOS 6 release.

In the blog post dated 16 September, the AppleVis writer, who identifies himself only as David, said he dropped the veil on iOS 6 for good reason. The post "A Warning to VoiceOver Users Ahead of the Release of iOS 6" claimed that blind or visually impaired Apple users may be cut off from the App Store software in the next iteration of iOS.
In addition to issues uncovered by developers in the days leading up to the iOS 6 release, our friends at Apple Insider have also heard from users having difficulty with the changes implemented by Apple since iOS 6 finally dropped.

Reader J. P. Shandra contacted AppleInsider this week to explain how the new layout in the iOS App Store has caused problems for him. In particular, the redesigned horizontal interface for listing the top apps, books and music is said to cause problems with those who use the VoiceOver feature in iOS.
With every passing day, new criticisms and concerns are manifesting across the blogosphere about these and other elements of iOS 6 that aren't particularly friendly to users with visual or hearing impairments.

However, Apple, as we know, tries diligently to be mindful of and respectful toward users with no shortage of disabilities. As a result, there's an excellent chance that some of the problems being brought to light today will be addressed at some point soon by the tech giant. For the time being, though, Apple has not responded publicly to the criticisms levied.

      Another complaint about IOS6.
Whats the bet IOS6.0.1 will be out within the month.

I'm also guessing the jailbreak will also wait for 6.0.1
I just upgraded today unknowing the iPad 3 wont downgrade with the current methods.

I also found out how crap an UNjailbroken iPad really is. Now I'm pissed I upgraded and cant jailbreak or downgrade.

Maybe we should sue apple for forcing us to buy their phones and upgrade everything to iOS 6

I'm wondering if the jailbreak will wait for the, supposed, iPad mini. No reason to burn an exploit if another iDevice is about to come out.

If you're unaware, the latest devices, namely the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5G, come from the factory with iOS 6 and have no known ability to downgrade them (there isn't an official release of any iOS 5 or earlier firmware for those devices), therefore one cannot downgrade them (at least not without some serious hackage. The only hope for this may be for the iPod Touch 5G, as it uses the A5 processor as opposed to the iPhone 5's A6, so there might be a small chance of coercing an iPhone 4S flavor of an iOS 5 firmware, assuming the SHSH hurdle can be overcome.)

I personally like ios 6, I mean I'm not impaired in any way but the maps app works great and I live in Kentucky, if the maps here are correct I'm sure they are in all these big cities. They may lack some but people need to give it time, just like how Siri is now kinda useful! I mean there will always be problems with a release but give Apple credit they always seem to make people happy in the end

Anyone having problems with iMessage on iOS 6? My iMessage contacts don't come up blue until they reply to a text I send., its not just one or two. Every one of them, few tests performed and still having problems. Anyone else having this issue?

Well if you're visually impaired what smartphone would be "friendly"? Seriously? Maybe apple will engineer some device that will emboss brail on every screen/site/app/etc... It'll be called "iCantC"
