  • Users Experiencing Difficulty Trying to Unplug Apple's New Lightning Connector

Along with Apple’s new handsets, such as the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5G, Apple ships a new sync cable called the Lightning Connector. It’s faster and smaller; the size allowed for Apple to pack more technology into the new generation iOS devices. The Lightning Connector is replacing the older 30-pin connector for future iOS devices.

Along with issues plaguing the iPhone 5 with scuffing and issues causing the Maps application to not work as expected, it appears that yet another issue is surfacing with another of Apple’s brand new products – the Lightning Connector.

Users are now reporting they are having trouble with the Lightning Connector’s USB end getting stuck in their computer’s USB port. In some cases, it was so extreme that it was necessary to take the machine to an Apple Store to have the USB end forcibly ejected from the machine.

CNET cites the issue as a possible problem with the USB connector itself, as the security latches appear to be much deeper than the previous USB plug, causing too much bite:

Original 30-pin connector: top. New Lightning Connector: bottom. (via CNET)

If you are having similar problems, you should look into taking your cable to the Apple Store and see if you can get a replacement. The problems do not appear to be affecting everybody, so there is a chance you might get a better cable the second time around.

Don't really like apple maps but my cable works fine, no scuffs, no light leaks, no wi-fi issues, and kept my unlimited data with Verizon without paying full price!! What i want to know is what percentage of IP5's are actually having any of these problems. I call Witch Hunt!!
HOW did you manage to keep unlimited data and not pay full price!?

Seriously so much blow way out of proportion. I been using mine since I received it last friday and the only thing I can complain about is that I miss the glass and harder metal band because it was a lot more durable. I used to be able to get away with having it in my pocket with keys (although I'd avoid it)... but I understand that aluminum is a softer metal and I don't expect more out of it than what it is. It's funny how people complain about everything, what's worse are the people who don't even own it. One anti-apple troll hears from one person about some small annoyance and it turns into an xxxxxxxx-gate. Man gtfo... it's not that serious.

With the following that Apple has comes extreme scrutiny. We will always pick apart every little detail of a launch product. I'm not saying that this cable issue isn't a big deal, it's simply "just something else". Be it scuffing, Antenna-gate, Wifi-issues, Light leaks, Maps issues, What ever it may be next week and so on.... It has to be expected, especially when Apple goes to he extremes that they due to keep their products under wraps and totally secret until the very moment that they ship 5 million of them out. It's completely impossible to beta-test EVERY single aspect of a new piece of hardware in every square inch of the earth to see how it will work, not to mention rolling out a new handset with a completely new OS.

Even in the worst case scenario: You wake up because you notice light leaking around a manufactured seem of you new iPhone5 in your dark bedroom. You try to inspect the case, only to find that your sync cable is stuck in your iMac. So you try to use your iPhone5 to locate the closest Apple store for repair, but your Wifi isn't working correctly on your iPhone5. You switch to 4g and locate the Apple store but on the way there you get lost because the new Maps App in iOS6 isn't as accurate as you thought it should have been at launch. When you finally make it home from you fiasco to the Apple store you notice that because you didn't invest in a protective case to protect your new iPhone5 from danger it has been scratched by the keys in your pocket.... Even after that complete worst case scenario, with all of the known issues to date, and the frustration.... You still have a iPhone 5 and not a clunky, cheaply made android phone.... So relax and basque in the fact you still have the top of the line handset even though it's not the magical unicorn that you's imagined it would be straight out of the box. It's still the best handset made and you could've blown your money on FAR worse.
      Hilarious. Thx.

This is an unusually high number of quality control issues for Apple. I'm thinking December will be a nice time to get a new phone.

I received mine yesterday i have no problems with wi-fi and light leak since is white, i did struggle a bit disconnecting the USB from the wall adapter to use the cable with the mac but i had no issues removing it from the mac at all. Actually i just bought another cable for the car charger because i thing i do tell you, the battery goes out quickly. I never had the battery on my IP4 drain below 40% by mid day no matter what i did on the phone, i guess LTE is to blame for that. Either way this is a fantastic phone and just like anything new it hasnt been tested enough so it has issues at first. Just like a car that you get recalls...

Most of it is speculation, I've had no problems with anything on my 5

Everyone is used to using a 2-yr old USB cable.. Of course the new one is gonna b tighter... U might even have to use 2 hands to unplug it without excess stress on the cord... Oh no!
And I bet more people are (un)plugging more often because they don't have as many cables to go around yet so they just move them

Same here I'd rather it be snug then just wiggle all over the place that might loosen the connection. I think people are just really ******** now. Lol. I love it. No scuffs. And what's wrong with the maps app? Can anyone tell me? I've seen pictures on the Internet of the melted highways but I have yet to find anything

I've had NO ISSUES what's so ever on my iPhone 5. Every one is so envious towards Apple... critiquing every little inch of their products. What's next... "Why did Apple choose an apple over a pair or orange. Ridiculous!

I've had no issues with my ip5 I love it. Couple scratches from my clumsy *** dropping it but I'm not the type to flip out about my phone getting scratched. If it bothers me to much ill just change the case and screen when they start coming out with them.

Exactly. Really. A USB cord getting stuck into laptop/computers. Theirs no telling if the laptop/ computer was a piece of junk they were trying to plug it into. Then the faulty USB port didn't want to release the cord.

The only issue I have with the Lightning cable is that you can't buy more yet! The local Apple Store is sold out (since launch day), the online Apple Store is back-ordered for nearly a month, no third-party versions available... If anything happens to the one and only Lightning cable I currently have, my phone is useless until replacements eventually become available.

I ordered extra lightening USB cable so I can leave one at home for the computer and have one for the car/travel :-)
For the price we are paying for the phone, I *expect* it to work correctly. The USB end is NOT new. Apple has been producing millions of the for years.

      True!

The only issue i am having is, when my phone connects to a 5GHZ wireless WiFi connection it is pretty much useless! The phone runs great with very fast speeds on a 2.4GHZ connection. I don't fully understand why it won't run on the 5GHZ.

Oh, and the spacebar issue is a bit frustrating but i am sure Apple will release some sort of fix for these issues soon! Overall i love the new phone!

Space bar issue? What's wrong with the space bar?

I bought two extra lightning cables at the apple store last Saturday. I should have bought more and sold them on eBay! I'd be a millionaire! Or I'd b really frustrated that I can't unplug any of them!
