  • Apple's Phil Schiller Comments On iPhone 5 Scuffing Issues

    Last week, ModMyi reported that iPhone 5 customers were bringing their iPhone 5 units home to find scuffmarks all over the aluminum band right out of the manufacturer’s box. The issue was prevalent with the black and white models of the iPhone 5, though because of the natural color of aluminum, the issue was much easier to see on the black iPhone 5 because it shined right through the colored coating.

    As a major issue that might just be recognized as easily as the iPhone 4’s antenna issue, Apple’s senior vice president of marketing, Phil Schiller, has begun to comment on the issue. Schiller is quoted by 9to5Mac responding to a user that asked about the issue:

    It almost seems as though Schiller has tiptoed around the issue, placing blame on the user for the scuffmarks in that he says, “with use.” It would make sense that with use, the aluminum may be subject to scratching, but when it happens right out of the box then it is a major issue. If Schiller meant that this is normal right out of the box then it is enough to leave most of us speechless, if not angry with Apple for their spotty iPhone 5 assembly process.

    For now, if you do experience any scuffmarks right out of the box, you will be able to return the iPhone 5 unit to the store you bought it from for a replacement. This may be the only fix for now, as Apple hasn’t revealed any plans to look into the issue just yet.

      Like many others, I'm skipping this upgrade, and will stick to the ip4 until the 5s or 6. I'm sure it will blow the 5 out the water

      I agree that in an ideal situation the product would be flawless out of box. This is why companies like apple allow you to enjoy your product in store before you go so that you know if its right or not. If something is wrong you simply say so and move on, its also why it comes with a warranty.

      My iPhone 5 was delivered by FedEx and it had a tiny yet noticeable chip on the shinny black trim and a dent. I took it back and got a new one took three phones (two replacements were brought out and we found scuffs on them) After a long day I finally got a mint phone the way it should have been from day one (9/21/12). These products do not sell for a couple of dollars therefore I want my phone brand new and sexy.

      If Apple knew that was "NORMAL", why they sold to us one product with aluminum knowing that its going to happen. That comment right there is a good comment coming from Apple to present in case that somebody want to sue apple behind this sh...t

      It becomes a difficult issue when you go back and forth to the Apple Store and they have no i5s for replacement.

      I don't get this - Normal wear and tear - yes ok fair wear and tear after what, 6 months, or say 9 months, but what 3 days and its called normal wear and tear - that can't be good .

      I've been through the 2, the 3 the 3s and the 4 - skipped the 4s as did nothing - not sure I'll go to the 5 - poor wifi, scratches easily, silly connector

      I've talked to Apple about this and they're aware of the issue. They're getting flooded with calls and shipping out replacements.

      Anodizing isn't the most reliable way to coat something if it's going to see a lot of wear.
      Sure it is, when it comes to anodizing, it's sort of a stain that is applied to the metal. The question is how wel we're they anodized(not to well). At least not normal Apple quality hahaha. The powder coating might work but im not sure if the coat would be thick enough to protect it anymore and if it was it would be visual and the buttons might not work because they are literally almost touching the body thats how precise they are! were talking max 1 mm
