  • Apple Projected to Sell 200 million iPhones Next Year

As MMi reported earlier today, Apple has already sold more than 5 million new iPhones during its first three days of availability.

But what we've seen so far this week may just be the tip of the iceberg for what Apple will accomplish in terms of sales next year. That's according to Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty.

On Monday, Huberty reported that she believes the new iPhone will log sales of 25 million units for the quarter ending September. The actual sales numbers, however, might be stronger is supply catches up with demand for the remainder of Q3 and Q4.

All told, Huberty says, 2013 could see iPhone sales of 200 million or better.

Currently, Huberty expects China to provide a big spark for the iPhone 5, especially if the device reaches China Unicom by December and China Telecom (NYSE:CHA) in the first quarter of calendar 2013. The analyst also predicts that Apple will reach a partnership with China Mobile, the largest carrier in the world, by the second half of 2013.
If supply constraints are removed, Huberty thinks Apple could sell 50 million iPhones in the upcoming 4th quarter of 2012 alone.

      5 million in 3 days
That is 1.67 million per day.
They had a long time to accumulate stock for the initial release even add sales for 4S/4 and maybe 3GS to that number.
Even if everyone is as enthusiastic to buy iPhone 5/4S/4 and even maybe 3GS everyday till 2013 as launch day and able to produce as much product:
There is 98 days left till 2013.
1.67 * 98 = 163.66 million phones, that is still far off from 200 million.

Your example shows that it's almost possible to sell 200 million by the end of 2012. The author is stating that Apple could potentially sell 200 million in 2013. So, going by your example, it's very likely that 200 million could be sold in 2013.

No matter what they sure do sell a lot of them! Wish I would have bought their stock when it was $89.00 a share. Usually I buy one however I waited this time to see the cons of it.

I believe the key word here is "next" year. As in sales of 2013. Could be wrong but that's how i read it

My bad, thought it says by 2013.
For all of 2013 it may be possible but I doubt it.
Projections is just guesses, why not guess big when you can

Wait... I think author edited his post, I saw 2013 in the title now it is Next Year.

He never said the launch was a failure.
Projected 8 million sold 5 million is pretty bad estimate, fulfilled only 63% of the projected figure. So how confident would you be on that 200 million projection? (if made by the same person).

He didn't say the launch was a failure, but he is insinuating that it was, as if Apple was aspiring to meet those estimates by analyst.
Same thing when analyst were projecting certain earning figures, and Apple was a bit short on those figures, yet everyone was crying that Apple had failed, nevermind those were still earnings.

Also they did say sell iPhones. Not just iPhone 5. So iPhone 4 and 4s count as well. Sounds like a reasonable number to get to
