  • iOS Hacker Ryan Petrich Ports Old Google-Powered Maps App to iOS 6

    iOS hacker and developer Ryan Petrich has managed to port the older Google-powered Maps application to iOS 6. Above, Ryan demonstrates the Google-powered Maps application running on his iOS 6 device from a video he uploaded to YouTube, which he shared in a Tweet some time ago.

    As we know, Apple has been under fire from users about the iOS 6 Maps application, which appears to be having accuracy problems, lacking features, and lacking user-friendliness when compared to Google Maps in iOS 5 and older. On the bright side, it does at least bring us turn-by-turn navigation. This is a feature that the iPhone has lacked for so long and was necessary to finally add.

    It is not known at this point in time if Ryan will be releasing the port to the public any time soon, but if he does, it will require a jailbroken iOS 6 device. Currently, only the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod touch 4G can be jailbroken by the public on iOS 6 (tethered unless you have an old bootrom iPhone 3GS). iOS hacker chpwn was able to jailbreak an iPhone 5 on the release date, but that jailbreak is still far away from a public release.

    For now, Ryan is playing around with the Maps application, which he cites as “mostly working,” but still prone to crashing. Hopefully some kind of workable port can be launched to the public through Cydia in the future. Better yet, hopefully Google will launch their own Google Maps solution to the App Store.

      I just discovered an app called Where is. So much better than apple maps AND with turn by turn for all those who have an iPhone 4.
      Cant wait for this to be released!

      iPhone 5 jailbreak far away from a public release date is pretty optimistic to say the least. Id say its more like "grab my time machine and travel far into the future" far away from a release date.

      This is great news.
      One of the main reasons why I'm not upgrading to IOS6 is the lack of Google Maps.
      For me and many other iPhone4 users IOS6 is more of a downgrade as you are loosing more useful features than gaining.
      This is 1 step to a good IOS6 experience. Next is Siri ported and the new photo enhancements.

      Apple is slipping and now jailbreakers are going to take full adavange of it. Hopefully he can implement the turn by turn into it .and 4s on iOS 6 is not jailbroken yet

      I remember xGPS in Cydia, used google maps for turn by turn directions on iDevices. Sadly the last update for it was back in 2009.

      IIRC, the whole reason google maps couldn't do turn by turn was back in the day they were licensing the map data from another company and had to agree to that restriction as a term of the lease.

      I've used the iOS 6 maps several times in Alabama and it's taken me directly to the right spot every single time...and being able to speak my destination to the phone makes it MUCH more preferable than my other turn-by-turn app, Navigon. I have a feeling it's not as bad as the media wants you to believe....just like the whole antenna crap when the iPhone 4 was first released.

      And if Tom Tom really is as bad as everyone says then they would have gone out of business long ago.

      Apple is most likely allowing the phones to be Jailbroken from now on seeing as most of their new features are based off of the ideas of the Jailbreak community. Probably their version of payback.
