  • Apple's iPhone 5 Deemed "The Fastest Smartphone in the Land"

A recently released report by PC Mag put the iPhone 5 against previous iPhone models, then against top Android models including Samsung’s Galaxy SIII released in June and Google’s Motorola Droid RAZR M released just last week. Guess what? Apple’s iPhone 5 was declared the world’s fastest smartphone.

When compared to previous years’ iPhone models, the iPhone 5 obviously came out ahead. If that wasn’t enough, it should be noted that it often came out ahead by a factor of two. In browser tests, it scored nearly twice as fast as the iPhone 4S in Browsermark, where it was more than three times as fast as the iPhone 4, even with all phones upgraded to iOS 6 (which boasts improved browser speeds for all). The graphic tests resulted in the iPhone 5 scoring 2.2 times as high as the iPhone 4S and more than 8 times as fast as the iPhone 4. In general, PC Mag said the iPhone 5 was overall 2.5 times as fast as the iPhone 4S and over 4.2 times as fast as the iPhone 4.

When Apple’s new iPhone was pitted against Android phones, PC Mag noted that last year’s iPhone 4S running iOS 6 on its dual core, 800MHz A5, “is about on par with leading Android 4.0 phones like the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Motorola Droid RAZR M, both of which are using the 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processors,” adding that “obviously, the difference is that Safari is a faster browser than the Android browser.” PC Mag continued by saying that the new iPhone 5 “takes things to the next level,” stating that “its Browsermark score is 80% higher, and it shows much quicker Sunspider times.”

The iPhone 5 won overall by a narrower margin, but as noted, “the ‘memory’ and ‘stream’ scores, both of which test loading data in and out of RAM, come out much better on the Apple device.” In a graphics-specific processing test, the iPhone 5 beat the S III and RAZR M by more than a factor of three. The report concluded that “based on these benchmarks, the iPhone 5 lives up to the promise of being twice as fast as the iPhone 4S. I’s also, for now, the fastest handheld computer sold in the U.S.”

Did read. And have experienced. The speed (or lack thereof) of the App Store loading and then downloading/installing is really amazing.........for its slowness. It took forever and a day just to perform updates on 9 apps. The S3 and Play Store runs circles around it on its updates/installation (even on a couple of 19 MB apps I have on it). Overall, for day to day use, I don't notice that much difference on everything else.

By the way i have both apple devices and the Galaxy S3 so I'm not being a android fan boy I love both android and IOS
I'm still waiting for my iPhone5 to be shipped :-(
I've always loved the way people qualify their bashing by stating how they own both iPhone and Android based phones so they can say X. It's a bit like the racist qualifying their racist statement by telling every one how they have black friends.

You say things like swipe keyboard (downloaded it for my 4s, didn't like it at all) Notification toggles (Not even sure what that is or why I might need it) and NFC (I have yet to run into any device that is NFC capable in any of my comings and goings). I'm not saying iPhone shouldn't have these options but frankly I don't care about them. It's just funny you bring them up like they are a huge part of the smart phone experience that one can't live without.

Dude, like I mean, like, I have both and use them side by side. Way cool, that way I can speak from first hand experience, unlike numerous that post. When the MAXX HD comes out I will be getting it also, as well as the Nokia 920. I'm not a phone snob like so many that I see posting. I use what I want, when I want. I am not hung up on the "gee, I have the iPhone so I'm way cool" or the "like wow man, I have the S3, I'm a geekster", or "Hey, look at me,I'm a Bill Gates wannabe, i have Windows mobile 8" attitude that I see going on. They all have their warts.

I think it gives you a pretty good idea that the person can speak from first hand experience. It's a qualification that is justified to make, as it gives you an indicator that the individual has experienced both. What is the difference in someone saying "I have a 2012 Ford P/U and a 2012 Chevy P/U" and then making comparisons of them?

Some can't. It's the same as saying that you can live without voice and data at the same time. Yes, you can, but once you have gotten used to it getting used to not having it is not fun.

I'm not quite sure what he means by notification toggles either. You can pull down the notification bar and you have toggles for stuff like wifi, bluetooth, GPS, data, etc. and if you have any notifications (like email, SMS, Facebook comments, etc.) you can see a brief synopsis of it (this is probably what he is referring to).

Used NFC and Google wallet the other day at an eating establishment. It was fun to watch the look on the cashiers face.

I hate the tiny keyboard on the 5, was used to using SwiftKey on the S3, and I have large hands. I have to type a LOT more carefully. SwiftKey was also nice in that it learns your typing style over time and will start anticipating your next word based upon your previous sentence structures. It has the ability to learn from your SMS messages, Facebook/Twitter postings and your Gmail email. it's one thing I would love to see on IOS, but doubt we ever will because of the walled garden attitude.

I didn't know that Swype had a Beta out for IOS, only a port that was made by someone that you could install if you were JB. I know that I used it for a short period on my 4 and it was not as good as the Swype that is official.

Yes I own both android and iOS devices so i can give an opinion about which is better because a lot of people including myself thought iOS was way better than android and never even owned a android device until I recently owned the galaxy s3 and saw it doing things STOCK that my iPhone couldn't do unless it was jailbroken.
But notification toggles are located in the notification screen where you can turn off wifi,Bluetooth, data and other things without having to into the setting menu
I do enjoy both but my iPhone MUST be jailbroken in order for me to truly enjoy it,while my galaxy is bone stock and Its just awsome,I just wished they can theme more than just the icons like they do in ios winterboard

I suppose its up to you but %95 of posts from "the other side" are not "appreciative" at all. They are more negative mostly. I have owned both OS' es but i rarely went on xda forums or the like. Unfortunately both sides seem to be populated with mostly snobby know it alls. Its a shame.

Where are the android fanboys now I mean don't get me wrong I have a htc one x and a lumia I like to try all platforms but the way I see the android fanboys come here and give that makes me laugh so guys its not all about the aize of the CPU and also I know you will mention yeah the galaxy S4 it's not here yet either way."

"haha! That is awesome! So iPhone 5 has less cores(still dual) while the S3 has quad core(double) and is still slower?? Wow! Guess you will have to over clock it and buy that crazy big extra battery that droid sells for those that over clock, as it sucks up your battery. When will they learn that balance is key. Too much of a good thing can turn out to be a bad thing..just saying :]"

Ohhhhh, that's right...I forgot Apple that actually pays attention to making its hardware work at its full potential and they make that hardware work smarter.

"But it just looks like a stretched iPhone 4/4S"

Ohhhh, that's right. Apple took the time to determine that typing on-the-go w/ one hand is still feasible with their new screen dimension. After all, this is still a phone...not a tablet.

"But I don't mind typing w/ two hands..."

Good luck avoiding crashing into people or having them crash into you while you have to stop in the middle of a sidewalk to type on your 5" screen!

      Stupid Fandroids!
Just out of curiosity, how do you type on a screen with out looking at it? 1 hand or 2 hands, how do you do it? I can type just fine on either screen size 1 handed, however I do have to look at the screen while I'm typing. Or I can just speak it instead.

I've been using android & iOS for quite a while now. I hate that the only way to make the iPhone worth anything functional is to jailbreak it. I like that what it does do it does well (except maps now). Hate the limitations Apple sets.
Nothing will ever be added to the iPhone that will allow you to share media files. Bluetooth, NFC, nothing. Apple will never add it. It will be crippled some how. I still enjoy using my idevices, but only if they are jailbroke.

I hate how many launchers come on Android devices, touchwiz, sence, moto blur. Leave it stock and let people decide what they want to use. I hate how long they take to release a update. I don't expect phones to be upgraded for 2 years though. I love that I don't have to jailbreak to get basic functions, but can root and open up even more options for customizing.

I like both OS's they both are good & they both are bad.

you do realize apples biggest selling point is the fact you can easily transfer media right? Ever heard of iTunes? Android needs an iTunes and then I will buy one because without a universal store for their phones where you can back up move music download music movies apps podcasts.. It's not going to beat apple

Yeah, like using drag and drop from just about any OS is just so difficult. By the way, where's that Linux version of iTunes available at?

You do realize I was talking about sharing media from phone to phone? Apple doesn't allow file transfers from phone to phone. Bluetooth profiles are left out. If they ever add NFC they will block it as well.
Did you actually read what i posted? "I've been using Android & iOS devices". iTunes is the thing I hate most about idevice products.

"iTunes for android". You can transfer files anyway you want with it. Bluetooth, wi-fi, data cable, mobile data. Plenty of programs to choose from to allow transfers the way you want. I can download/backup everything you mentioned, To any place I want.
I can only assume you've never used Android by the comments you made. As for never beating Apple, just search Mobile OS share.

Like I said earlier. I like both & dislike both each for different reasons. Will continue to use both.

Now for the morons who have not done there research let's not forget jellybean has scored well over 1700 in geekbench on the s3 but i guess you somehow you forgot to mention that in your bragging and bashing towards samsung products,so it's only a matter of time until it's rolled out to everyone and that score is much different.

regardless the s3 has way more features than the iphone/ios,i think a few seconds won't make a difference when buying a phone to me or any smart logical person.

mind you i have had every iphone since day 1 just got my s3 a month ago or so

at the end of the day it comes down to personal choice, but if you merely want to go off specs etc the s3 is by far the winner, and once jellybean is released people can't brag about those benchmarks anymore.i have also tested it on jellybean rom when i was rooted and the score is very similar to this, tho this is not my screen shot below this has been posted by other members using jb as well, lets also not forget they can root and overclock there phone to even raise those scores even more than it is on stock.

Was just reading through these comments while watching a NFL game at a local sports bar. As I read I heard the announcers say you can go to iTunes to download game highlights, recaps, etc...A uninformed guy asked if he could do that on his droid, and unfortunately found out that he could not. This brought up the subject of the iPhone 5 madness, and a discussion started amongst the bar patrons about who will be getting it, if they will be getting it...which turned into when they will be getting it.

Some were droid users, some had iPhone 3 or 4s, but almost everyone wanted the iPhone 5...despite the millions of $$$ Samsung spent on their horrible commercials. Samsung should really ask Google for advice on how to make good commercials...Googles Chrome commercials are awesome, and the new one I saw today, I think is the best one I have seen yet. Instead of creating a gimmicky ad campaign, which offends almost all potential customers, make something moving and just flat out cool like Google did.

It's just amazing to me that the tech "average Joe" seems to be so much more level headed and reasonable when it comes to which phone to get, and why. No one at the bar was yelling at someone else, calling them stupid for having a iPhone or for planning on getting a iPhone 5.
