  • That Was Fast... iPhone 5 Already Jailbroken

The iPhone 5 just launched publicly today after having been pre-ordered to death over the past week. Not even 12 hours past the official launch, iOS hacker and developer Grant Paul (chpwn) has managed to jailbreak an iPhone 5. Even more awesome is that the iPhone 5 runs iOS 6, which is Apple’s latest mobile operating system.

The screenshot above was Tweeted on Twitter by chpwn this evening and it shows Cydia at the bottom of the home screen. Chpwn has confirmed via Twitter that the iPhone 5 he took a screenshot of is indeed jailbroken and that the Cydia application was not just compiled on a developer iPhone 5. This is great news for the jailbreak community and has revealed that there is a light at the end of the dark tunnel.

In case you doubt that the screenshot is of an iPhone 5, you can tell by the resolution of the screenshot, which is taller than that of the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. This allows for an extra row of application icons at the bottom of the screen, which the iPhone 5's larger four-inch display does indeed have.

There is currently no estimated time of arrival on a jailbreak for the iPhone 5 and it probably won’t be out for a good amount of months – developing a jailbreak takes time and patience, as compatibility and hammering out bugs are always top priority before releasing any kind of solution to the general public.

EDIT: Chpwn has just Tweeted Cydia's home page on the iPhone 5:

EDIT #2: Chpwn has just Tweeted Cydia's home page on the iPhone 5 with the bottom row of text visible and the device visible:

ModMyi will be keeping close tabs on the iPhone 5 jailbreak development, so stay tuned!

I entirely agree about the 'better machine' the 5 is - but like some others this is the first time since 2G iPhone that I haven't gotten my new one on day 1. I went to Apple store last night to take a peek and the 5 it's just the damned clumsiest thing I've ever held in my hand!! Too tall. I don't know why Apple caved into the 'bigger screen' mantra. And then to have only made it taller and not wider??! Now it's not even close to a true 16:9 aspect ratio. It just feels goofy in my hand. And the new non- glass back - also not working for me. I'll eventually get one for the A6 and LTE.. But I'm disappointed with the design this time. I'll easily wait for jailbreak to arrive around Christmas before I upgrade. Really disappointed. :-(

IMO..I don't think there will be a JB released for couple of months. It is great to see that there were no complications with the A6 chip, but the devs will hold back on the release. Apple will be patching up the map issue so I'm sure a new update is right around the corner for iOS 6 and I believe that's when the JB will be released.

You must be a mental patient because the 5 is an all around piece of crap. Scratching problems, no iHomes (just crappy adapters), horrible speeds, headphone jack on the bottom, no NFC, even worse battery life, horrible look, too large of a screen, etc. It just keeps getting worse and worse.

Wow you must be in another dimension. Everything you said is the complete opposite. Except the scratches but what phone doesn't. Did you see the galaxy s3 drop and iPhone 5? No ihomes? Really the phone is out a little over 24 hours. Give it a rest. Headphone jack is on the bottom so the cord is bent when you stick it in your pocket upside down. Or laying on your back the cord isn't in the way of the screen. No NFC big deal cause we all use that. Although it is your opinion and I can totally respect that but some of those things were completely wrong.

Oh dear. Sounds pretty grim. Nevertheless, I appreciate your honest, objective review. It is actually getting WORSE?? Do you have any suggestions to prevent my shiney new one from succumbing this "decay process"? I'm really impressed with it so far. Having had every iPhone since the 3G I can say it is without a doubt the best yet (in my opinion, of course) but you've got me worried it will deteriorate.

Don't buy the new phone 5 and I love the iPhone I had all of them from the first one and I never been so mad as I am today
You notice that also huh? I was downloading apps (both on my wifi - 10 mb d/l speed -and LTE), and I swear it looked like the thing was on 3G, and it took forever for each app to download and install. I'm used to the S3 and the Play Store. Even a 15mb app didn't take anywhere near as long to download and install.

I'm loving this new phone. I'm having no wifi problems at all. Also I did a speed test of LTE in my area - download of 24 and upload of 7 (whereas upload speed on wifi was only 5). The sound is amazing on phone calls, speaker phone, etc.
      Still miss jailbreak though.

I got a speediest result of 50down (very upper end of LTE - not 100 like they claim) on my iPad Verizon 4G only ONCE sitting in a parking lot. Then never after that. I would love to see results from people on different dates in the Speed Test screen to see if there's any consistency with the higher speeds. I regularly get between 12-17 down and 3-4 up.. Never anywhere near the higher end like that.

100Mbs is the theoretical speed for LTE. Similarly to how HSPA+ speeds are supposed to offer 14.4Mbs, but you only usually get anywhere from 4Mbs-10Mbs. Traffic plays a big role. You would likely only get these 100Mbs speeds if you were the only one in the world using LTE.

Yeah. I totally get it. But even that 60 is not a day to day everywhere common speed any of us will get. I regularly get 9-17 down on my iPad and that's getting near wifi speeds. I'm very happy with LTE. Now I just wish AT&T would get it in my city. I wonder if LTE on AT&T towers will be any worse than Verizon's towers. I hear there are different "bands" that factor into the equation of signal strength, etc.

Once AT&T gets LTE. Anything will be better than 4g. I have no problems getting the phone. I just don't wanna lose my jailbreak. Not so much for themes but for tweaks

Me too, bro! Well said. I can't live any length of time these days without a jailbreak. So I'll just happily wait to upgrade until they find the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 5 on iOS 6. Actually LTE is a 4G (meaning fourth-generation) technology too; it's just the faster one over AT&T's current 4G HSPA+.

I'm trying to cut down my tweaks as much as I can so that I can live with it enough to upgrade to ios6 and hopefully soon a jailbreak will be available. Hoping 4s will be next soon to be jailbroken

Not 'til close to Christmas. And the nature of non Boot Rom exploits is that the jailbreak for iOS 6 won't be released for one phone before another. When we finally get the untethered JB it will be for all phones running iOS 6 at the same time. The iPhone 4 exploit was a bootrom exploit meaning that an iP4 will always have a JB as soon as any new iOS comes out.

But the 3GS, 4S and 5 will get the untethered JB at the same time. As was the case for the 4S too- which i will add took a little over 15 weeks.

So about Christmas-time. And each new iOS gets a little harder to JB. So maybe January. :-(. That's why I'm sticking with 4S for now. Long about Jan there'll be an untethered JB AND LTE should be in my city with AT&T. Til then I need my jailbreak.
