  • Office 2011 for Mac Finally Gets Retina Display Support for New MacBook Pro

Microsoft almost had Office 2011 for Mac users fleeing the scene and giving Apple’s competing iWork software a try when a support agent said Microsoft couldn’t guarantee retina display support for their productivity software. Applications for the Mac have been adopting tons of support for the hardware in the new MacBook Pro with retina display, so it had seemed too sketchy for a company with a good name like Microsoft to leave these users out in the cold.

The good news is Microsoft has not chosen to leave these MacBook Pro with retina display users out in the cold. Microsoft has issued an update to the Office 2011 for Mac software that brings retina display support to the popular productivity suite (see below):

Now that one of the best productivity software suites for the Mac is retina display compatible, anyone that bought the new MacBook Pro with retina display will be able to use Microsoft's software without looking at blurry pixels that kill the attractiveness of the display.

Apart from the support for Apple’s new MacBook Pro with retina display, the update comes along with some bug fixes and performance enhancements that can all be viewed from Microsoft’s support link, which is included in the update window for our curious minds to explore.

The update may not pop up automatically for everyone at first. If you would like to invoke the update manually to get it all over and done with, then open one of the Microsoft Office 2011 suite applications such as Word and in the Menu Bar go to Help>Check for Updates. This will launch Microsoft AutoUpdate and allow you to download and install the update.

      1. Open terminal window
      2. Type "touch"
      3. Open Finder and navigate to Microsoft Office.
      4. Drag and drop Microsoft Excel.app, Microsoft Outlook.app, Microsoft PowerPoint.app, Microsoft Word.app (yes all 4 of them) into the terminal window then hit enter
      5. Now run the app and see the different.
