  • Apple Updates Find My iPhone, Adds iOS 6 Support and Aesthetic Makeover

    With today’s release of iOS 6 to the general public after months of beta testing, Apple is now launching their own applications with support for the new operating system. One of the more popular applications among iOS users is the free Find My iPhone application because it allows users to track stolen or lost iOS devices and Mac computers on a map from any devices that are linked to your Apple ID.

    As shown above, the application icon has been changed to lighter colors that look great on your home screen. Below, you can see the new application interface, which has been completely redesigned to look so much better than the bland, boring look of the previous version (1.4) of Find My iPhone. At the login screen, colors pop out at you and when you log in, a gorgeous loading screen accompanies you where a compass pin wags left and right.



    In addition, version 2.0 of Find My iPhone adds support for Apple’s new Maps application. It no longer uses Google Maps as a method of showing the location of your iOS devices. These maps from Apple are custom designed by the company and are supported by TomTom; they look a whole lot nicer than Google Maps:



    When devices are located, their screens light up, showing a home screen or desktop. If they are not located, the screens will be blacked out. This is a nice little touch that adds to the aesthetic value of the application. The application adds support for battery charge indicators (located in the top right of the map) to show you the battery levels of your devices. The update also adds support for Lost Mode on devices running iOS 6 or newer; all of this within the new wooden frame of the application.

    Find My iPhone is a free application and can be downloaded from this link (App Store) to use with your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Mac computers.

      I like the new interface but google was more accurate. Well from testing where I'm currently located, they were. I care far more about that feature than the look.

      It's not the map itself that comes up with the accuracy. In fact, you can put just about any map you want under the pin and each will be just as accurate as the other. In iOS 6 your iPhone is still using the same GPS unit that came with it when you had iOS 5 installed. If anything, your GPS unit is off.

      Shame that they give less details, no satellite image where I live in the UK

      It Sucks that wipe button is right there at the bottom, dont want to accidentally press that ****

      It doesn't just automatically wipe your device. It definitely warns you of what you're about to do. Just letting it automatically wipe your device would be terrible design. Apple is known for their two-step processes so that small (or large if you consider it) mistakes like these don't happen.

      What I'm referring to us recognizing different places. If I search for let's say a mom and pop restaurant, google most often would recognize that place. With Apple, it only see well known restaurants.

      You might want to alert everyone to watch out when they are updating apps in iTunes. Some apps now need IOS6 like iMovie.
      So if your staying on IOS5.1.1 or below then make sure you DONT update iMovie.
      There are a few other apps like this.
      I spoofed my iPad to 6.0 and Find My Friends no longer loads. I removed the spoof and it works fine now.
      Same for iMovie. That 6.0 version doesn't work at all on IOS5.1.1 with or without the 6.0 spoof.

      Well lets hope so then, cause I didn't want to risk testing it, the sound played with no warning so I'm thinking it's the same with wipe.

      THIS. I just noticed that the updates for iMovie and Cards required iOS 6 and I was like "WTF" and came here to get the skinny. I don't use Cards, but that sucks about iMovie. booooo.

      Edit: also FYI, Update Hider in Cydia is free and you can just hide the Cards, iMovie, etc updates in the app store so that the constant update badges don't annoy you (and so you don't accidentally update them)

      Funny how find my iPhone uses apple maps in the app but the email it sends with the location is still google maps! Lol
