  • Apple Raises The Curtain on iPhone 5

Phil Schiller did the honors of unveiling Apple's new iPhone 5 today in San Francisco.

While taking the covers off of the next-generation iPhone, Schiller described the device as an absolute "jewel."

It's the thinnest and lightest iPhone Apple has produced so far at just 7.6mm thick. All told, that's 18% thinner than the last model.

"I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the hardware and software engineering that has gone into this product is unlike we've ever undertaken before," he said. "So, iPhone 5. It is made entirely of glass and aluminum. It's designed and built to an exacting level of standard unlike anything we, or anyone in our industry, have made before."

As we all anticipated, the 6th generation Apple smartphone will deliver 4G LTE connectivity. "We've updated every aspect of iPhone 5. Everything has been enhanced," Schiller says, explaining that in the US, Sprint, AT&T and Verizon will support LTE on the iPhone 5. "And we have a really unique innovation with a dynamic antenna. It can automatically switch antenna connections." Similar to how the 4S worked."

The iPhone 5 is also the biggest iPhone Apple has released in terms of screen size. You've got a 326ppi Retina display (4-inches) with 1136 x 640 resolution. In short, the new iPhone delivers the same width as before, but it's now taller.

The A6 processor, needless to say, will dramatically speed up graphics and general CPU performance. Schiller specifically drew attention to how A6 will launch pages twice as fast as before.

With all the new features, you may be wondering how battery life will be impacted. According to Schiller, iPhone 5 battery life won't be diminished over the iPhone 4S.

iPhone 5 will be available in black and white. The price structure for iPhone 5 is the same as previous models: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB. Pre-orders start on Friday the 14th for shipping on September 21st in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Stay with MMi for more coverage coming out of San Francisco today.

Samsung note is just ridiculous. Might as well carry a laptop and hold it to your ear to make calls

I love how Samsung/android fanboys come here and say: "hahaha it's the same phone just faster and better hardware". I just want to ask these same people. What exactly was so revolutionarily different from the galaxy s2 and the galaxy s3? Faster? Better hardware? Curved back?

Sad that I waited a year for this. While I'm sure it will sell well for Apple, I won't be buying it. I skipped the 4S & have been waiting for today. Apple really disappointed me. Not even a OS feature only for the iPhone 5.

iOS has grown extremely boring for me. Looks like my next phone will be Android. After all the "leaks" I have already started checking out other devices. I hate Samsung phones so no way I'm getting a S3. Lucky for me I have been using both iOS & Android devices for years.

So I guess by some of the comments, that would make me a hater. The funny thing is I have been using iPhones since 2007, & Android since the original Nexus. Not a hater, just know Apple wasted the past 2 years sitting on their butts.
The iPod would make a better looking phone. I will admit it looks a little better than the leaked images, but still sad. The slow minor upgrades to iOS is the worst part about it. Same boring no you can't do that crap with a extra row of icons.

For those that upgrade & get the iPhone 5, enjoy hope it does everything you want & need.

The phone looks nice, but I'm a little disappointed in the lack of increase in battery life. The fact that it's as good as the 4S is nice, but I keep hoping for something more. It's kind of a given that the battery will match the previous one, but what I'd like is for one that exceeds it. And not by a little tiny bit, but by 50% or something. It's kind of a bummer that we're not there yet. Maybe next year.

Innovation this, innovation that. What new innovation has come out since the iPhone 4 and galaxy S2. People are confusing innovation with a total re-design, if the iPhone5 had the tear drop design no one would be complaining.. Everyone know iOS 6 wasn't gonna bring much change. Until there is a ground breaking technology break threw in the next few years I don't see any new innovation hitting the market just a bunch of redesigned smartphone with mult-core processor.

That's the only thing I was looking for in this thread! Thank you for actually being useful instead of the other ridiculous comments in here! LOL!

So, same time as last year...let's see how the servers hold up!

      Set your watches you mothers!

Obviously the complaining over the past 5 years has got no one anywhere so I don't see why complain now. Lol. Either you want it or you don't.

Same basic design only slightly bigger. Same boring OS only slightly updated! Same boring lock-screen. Same boring windows 3.1'esque folders with icons. If this is Apple's pace of "innovation" then Samsung, Motorola and Nokia will topple the house that Steve built the likes of which has not been scene in human history since the Vandals and Visigoths sacked Rome!

The point? History teaches us that even seemingly invincible Empires Fall too!!!

I enjoy how people keep saying that Samsung, Motorola and Nokia will topple Apple's empire, etc.

It's never going to happen. And I'm not saying this as a fanboy, I'm saying it as a realist. These products sell, period. Innovative, not innovative, upgraded, downgraded, whatever. They sell by the millions. Samsung, Motorola and Nokia are never going to catch up, let alone surpass. Maybe if they all joined forces they could come close, but alone, no single phone maker is going to beat Apple at selling phones. Not until they have a product that's as iconic and as must have (particularly to people who buy anything touted as "amazing") as the iphone. Right now, Samsung, Motorola and Nokia all make a zillion phones each and I'm guessing that if you asked 10 people on the street to name ONE type of phone from any of those 3 companies- they probably couldn't do it. And until people can (if ever) none of those companies stand a chance of ever touching Apple.

People saying this the second disappointment in a row from apple in terms of iPhones yet the 4s has outsold the 4 and I have no doubt the 5 will outsell any phone on the market.

If you want a phone made out of what feels like the plastic used on a cheap child's toy feel free to spend you hard earned cash on the S3

OMG T-Mobile AWS support, NOT. Glad I didn't even waste my time watching this as it was just another disappointment. But I do love my GS3 and it will blow away any iPhone 4 or 5 or 6 or whatever.

I hate new iPhone releases. I never buy one on releases bc my contract isn't up yet for discounted pricing and I can't afford it at the time to buy at full retail. I get all jealous of other people and stuff bc they pre-order or they get to stand in line and buy it on release day. This is a depressing yet exciting time for me lol.

Yeah, it's disappointing not to see T-Mobile support on the iPhone. I don't agree with the GS3 thing though, that's a given I suppose lol. Personal preference, to each his own. iPhones aren't perfect and probably never will be, but Apple must be doing something right to have people still buying its products.
