  • Apple Raises The Curtain on iPhone 5

Phil Schiller did the honors of unveiling Apple's new iPhone 5 today in San Francisco.

While taking the covers off of the next-generation iPhone, Schiller described the device as an absolute "jewel."

It's the thinnest and lightest iPhone Apple has produced so far at just 7.6mm thick. All told, that's 18% thinner than the last model.

"I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the hardware and software engineering that has gone into this product is unlike we've ever undertaken before," he said. "So, iPhone 5. It is made entirely of glass and aluminum. It's designed and built to an exacting level of standard unlike anything we, or anyone in our industry, have made before."

As we all anticipated, the 6th generation Apple smartphone will deliver 4G LTE connectivity. "We've updated every aspect of iPhone 5. Everything has been enhanced," Schiller says, explaining that in the US, Sprint, AT&T and Verizon will support LTE on the iPhone 5. "And we have a really unique innovation with a dynamic antenna. It can automatically switch antenna connections." Similar to how the 4S worked."

The iPhone 5 is also the biggest iPhone Apple has released in terms of screen size. You've got a 326ppi Retina display (4-inches) with 1136 x 640 resolution. In short, the new iPhone delivers the same width as before, but it's now taller.

The A6 processor, needless to say, will dramatically speed up graphics and general CPU performance. Schiller specifically drew attention to how A6 will launch pages twice as fast as before.

With all the new features, you may be wondering how battery life will be impacted. According to Schiller, iPhone 5 battery life won't be diminished over the iPhone 4S.

iPhone 5 will be available in black and white. The price structure for iPhone 5 is the same as previous models: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB. Pre-orders start on Friday the 14th for shipping on September 21st in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Stay with MMi for more coverage coming out of San Francisco today.

All of you haters make me laugh. I've sold the iPhone to most of the people I work with, and the ones who bought android phones with big screens and such are now going to buy this phone.

At least custom notification center widgets. That's why I jailbreak.

I find it funny as hell that there is nothing but complainers on here yet I guarantee there will be more iPhone 5's sold the first week then the s3 has since it came out. Really is this sight full of nothing but android fan boys, or is everyone really just complaining to just turn around and buy it a week from now. IPhone isn't bought because its looks and feel. Yes that helps but it doesn't mean as much as the user friendliness and compatibility that comes from getting an iPhone over an android. S3 or any other android for that matter will never surpass the iPhone.

Looks of the phone is now confirmed. Goophone now have legal rights to file injunction and copyright infringement lawsuit against Apple. hahaha

I thought the same thing. I had a 4s and an ipad. Then I realized the ipad was to big to carry around everywhere and the 4s was too small. Now all I have is a GS3 and it works better than both.

I'm excited to get my hands on this. Maybe its because I still have a 4, I don't know. I'm surprised no one commented on how nice the black iphone looks with the dark colored band instead of the silver. Every iphone i've used has never given me an issue. Never once have I complained it needed some feature. IDK, maybe its just me. I'm not saying the IP5 is the best phone made but it seems no one is ever satisfied. I don't even care they are just releasing features that other phones have had either, bc 9/10 times they do a better job executing that feature than other phones.
I think most people were expecting something new, as in technology that others haven't already been using for 2 or more years. It's generally expected to get new functionality, not just a face lift. Some people only care about what their phones look like, others care about having the latest and greatest features. Everybody has their own opinions.

True 16x9 display? It's 1136x640. True 16x9 would be 1138x640. TWO PIXELS OFF, BIG WHOOP! Now why they didn't actually make it 1138x640 who knows, but still, 2 stinkin' pixels difference in image width. I think people can get over that.
android sucks.. hehe. i had an iPhone for 4 years till i saw an android with Clockworkmod. do iPhone users still use iTunes to "backup" their phone?

It's a phone... what do you expect it to do? transform into a shuttle and fly you to Mars? no. It makes call and aids your everyday life without being to bulky and difficult to carry around.

The only things I would be interested in having is no-glasses 3D support like the N3DS, a project-able keyboard, an 8MP front-facing camera and dual back cameras to shoot in 3D... but I wouldn't want any of this if it were to compromise the beautiful, thin designs of the iPhone.

There's only so much power a small device can have in terms of power without pushing the costs up too high. The most important aspect these days is software and iOS is amazing although it is a little restrictive but still much nicer to use than Android.

Also, I must add that I'm impressed with the full glass and aluminium construct, that right there represents the luxury standard to which iPhones are made, not the tacky plastic used by Samsung and other competitors (and I'm not a Samsung/Android hater, I actually like the S3, it's a good phone).
