  • Apple Raises The Curtain on iPhone 5

Phil Schiller did the honors of unveiling Apple's new iPhone 5 today in San Francisco.

While taking the covers off of the next-generation iPhone, Schiller described the device as an absolute "jewel."

It's the thinnest and lightest iPhone Apple has produced so far at just 7.6mm thick. All told, that's 18% thinner than the last model.

"I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the hardware and software engineering that has gone into this product is unlike we've ever undertaken before," he said. "So, iPhone 5. It is made entirely of glass and aluminum. It's designed and built to an exacting level of standard unlike anything we, or anyone in our industry, have made before."

As we all anticipated, the 6th generation Apple smartphone will deliver 4G LTE connectivity. "We've updated every aspect of iPhone 5. Everything has been enhanced," Schiller says, explaining that in the US, Sprint, AT&T and Verizon will support LTE on the iPhone 5. "And we have a really unique innovation with a dynamic antenna. It can automatically switch antenna connections." Similar to how the 4S worked."

The iPhone 5 is also the biggest iPhone Apple has released in terms of screen size. You've got a 326ppi Retina display (4-inches) with 1136 x 640 resolution. In short, the new iPhone delivers the same width as before, but it's now taller.

The A6 processor, needless to say, will dramatically speed up graphics and general CPU performance. Schiller specifically drew attention to how A6 will launch pages twice as fast as before.

With all the new features, you may be wondering how battery life will be impacted. According to Schiller, iPhone 5 battery life won't be diminished over the iPhone 4S.

iPhone 5 will be available in black and white. The price structure for iPhone 5 is the same as previous models: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB. Pre-orders start on Friday the 14th for shipping on September 21st in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Stay with MMi for more coverage coming out of San Francisco today.

Well, the phone is laughable. He actually use the word innovate... Why? I could care less about the phone anyway, my SIII is wonderful.

But the one thing that I do care about is why no clip on the Nano? I love the new design and I love my current Nano. I work out with mine every day, and the clip is the best thing about it.

From an engineering standpoint, this IS a huge upgrade/redesign.

I mean the damn thing is less than 8mm thick. The camera (while still 8MP) got a considerable upgrade as far as sensors go which should make for even better photos. Wifi finally got upgraded to N and we get LTE. THey basically went down a checklist of things the iPhone needed and addressed them.

As for the omissions, remember apple is VERY conservative when it comes to ADDING stuff. The first iPhone didn't even have 3G! Wireless charging would be too expensive and probably add bulk to the phone for something that a fringe minority would use. It'd also require an expensive charging pad and I don't see them ever adding that. NFC I can genuinely see them adding in maybe 2 generations. As it is, it would be an iPhone to iPhone gimmick with little to no support from anything else.

The iPhone 4S and everything else before it have sold like hot cakes mainly BECAUSE it's the same phone. The sale numbers show people obviously love the design. They would be absolutely mad to radically change it for the sake of changing it. Chisel at the corners, make it faster an snappier and people will happily step up.

I really don't get what you all are complaining about. This new iPhone retains everything that we love about the current iPhone and more. So what if the leaks look to be true...it's still the best build quality phone you'll find on the market currently. Go onto apple's site and watch the iPhone 5 video. I think then, you'll appreciate what it is quite a bit more.

I find it funny that last year people complained because it wasn't bigger. Now they are complaining about new features. Make up your mind. I will def be upgrading. People always gotta complain. Get an s3. Go ahead. I have one too. It's nothing to my 4s but larger. It's a great phone if u like random reboots and a sh** app store.

what exactly were you people expecting? jeez...

I'm excited to get my hands on this. Maybe its because I still have a 4, I don't know. I'm surprised no one commented on how nice the black iphone looks with the dark colored band instead of the silver. Every iphone i've used has never given me an issue. Never once have I complained it needed some feature. IDK, maybe its just me. I'm not saying the IP5 is the best phone made but it seems no one is ever satisfied. I don't even care they are just releasing features that other phones have had either, bc 9/10 times they do a better job executing that feature than other phones.

The sale numbers dont show ppl love the design it shows that ppl will buy anything with an apple logo on it even if it looks the same. Its a huge upgrade and redesign LOL so i should make my car longer then claim its a new car and sell it wow.... But i do agree from an engineering stand point yes but not from a consumer stand point

Hardware looks awesome. Haters gonna hate.

I was hoping for some addition to iOS to make it more interactive (themes, widgets etc), but there's always iwidget and all that good stuff

Im not impressed even though the added hardware is actually really nice because i wanted a "wow" factor that the leaks took away from me.
If you wasn't impressed with the leaks, then you definitely be disappointed now. Don't blame the leaks for your disappointments.

And it's EXACTLY as what was leaked months ago! The leaked housing, leaked digitizer, leaked info of the resolution, specs, downsized dock connector, headphone jack on the bottom, all true. I remember there being a lot of naysayers whenever I said I bet the leaks were legit, so now I can say, "I told you so!"

I agree with everything above, except that the iPhone 5 is a nice to have, not a must have especially for 4S users. I'm on the original iPhone 4 so I will be picking it up obviously over the SIII but I can't help but feel underwhelmed. I'll most likely skip the preorder as well so feel free to take my spot

According to Apple's website there are three versions of the iPhone 5. The CDMA version will support LTE bands 1, 3, 5 & 25, in addition to Verizon's LTE band 13 (700 MHz), which means Verizion's LTE will work internationally. Yay Verizon!

The AT&T version will only support bands 4 and 17, which means AT&T's LTE won't work outside of the US. Global compatibility used to be the only advantage AT&T had. Oh dear. Poor old AT&T...
