  • Apple Raises The Curtain on iPhone 5

Phil Schiller did the honors of unveiling Apple's new iPhone 5 today in San Francisco.

While taking the covers off of the next-generation iPhone, Schiller described the device as an absolute "jewel."

It's the thinnest and lightest iPhone Apple has produced so far at just 7.6mm thick. All told, that's 18% thinner than the last model.

"I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the hardware and software engineering that has gone into this product is unlike we've ever undertaken before," he said. "So, iPhone 5. It is made entirely of glass and aluminum. It's designed and built to an exacting level of standard unlike anything we, or anyone in our industry, have made before."

As we all anticipated, the 6th generation Apple smartphone will deliver 4G LTE connectivity. "We've updated every aspect of iPhone 5. Everything has been enhanced," Schiller says, explaining that in the US, Sprint, AT&T and Verizon will support LTE on the iPhone 5. "And we have a really unique innovation with a dynamic antenna. It can automatically switch antenna connections." Similar to how the 4S worked."

The iPhone 5 is also the biggest iPhone Apple has released in terms of screen size. You've got a 326ppi Retina display (4-inches) with 1136 x 640 resolution. In short, the new iPhone delivers the same width as before, but it's now taller.

The A6 processor, needless to say, will dramatically speed up graphics and general CPU performance. Schiller specifically drew attention to how A6 will launch pages twice as fast as before.

With all the new features, you may be wondering how battery life will be impacted. According to Schiller, iPhone 5 battery life won't be diminished over the iPhone 4S.

iPhone 5 will be available in black and white. The price structure for iPhone 5 is the same as previous models: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB. Pre-orders start on Friday the 14th for shipping on September 21st in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Stay with MMi for more coverage coming out of San Francisco today.

      The Verizon/CDMA version supports LTE bands 1, 3, 5 & 25, in addition to Verizon's domestic LTE band 13 (700 MHz).

The AT&T/GSM version only supports LTE bands 4 and 17.

This means (somewhat ironically, given that, historically, Verizon's CDMA-only phones would never work anywhere but the US), it is Verizon's LTE which is going to work internationally. So, IMHO, there's not much point in buying an AT&T iPhone 5 for the sake of LTE. AT&T has very little LTE coverage in the US (and promised the FCC during the attempted T-Mobile merger that they wouldn't be able to compete with competitor LTE networks if that merger failed - which of course, it did) and now it's confirmed that the AT&T iPhone 5 will NEVER have any LTE coverage outside of the US.

To answer NewdestinyX's question, yes, the best option (if/when Apple ever sell it) would be an unlocked Verizon CDMA model A1429.

I'm sorry was that a fancy word for plastic?

Lol. Well some people don't like the feel of I guess polycarbonate device. I certainly prefer to have a glass cup over a plastic cup, figuratively speaking. Just feels better to me.

I love how you forgot to mention:

      Galaxy Nexus

      Galaxy Note/2
HTC EVO 4G LTE.....just to name a few

Since you have no idea what's the difference, here is a quick video that gives you an idea of what polycarbonate is

I don't think the EVO 4G is worth mentioning. Now the GS3 and HTC One X are definitely worth talking about in comparison.

I love my Iphone4 and now I can get one that's Faster, Thinner, Lighter, and with a Bigger Screen!! Seems like an upgrade to me...

I admit the IOS definitely needs a jailbreak and a few tweaks to make it as functional and all the Droids I've had in the past... But that's why we have MMI!! And if you don't like JB then why are you on this site!?! Not to mention even after a JB my Iphone is twice as stable as my droids, and the battery last 4X as long.

Counting the hours till I can pre-order

To be very clear - you should say - Verizon will be the only carrier to have "LTE" overseas. AT&T will for sure have their 4G HDSPA "thingie" overseas still. Europe is still GSM. ANd so is AT&T. So AT&T people won't LOSE any services they now have overseas. Important caveat to make.

So, IMHO, there's not much point in buying an AT&T iPhone 5 for the sake of LTE.
Yes. This I agree with. But even more than LTE overseas - is that LTE in the US on AT&T is paltry to non-existent and won't get better any time soon. That's by biggest concern.

Where's you data that we could corroborate? That statement is too far reaching. If true. I just want to read about it myself from a verifiable source. It sounds like it COULD be true - but I can't just take your word for it.. LOL!! No offense.

What do you mean by 'if/when Apple ever sells it'? They have always sold Factory unlocked versions of AT&T and Verizon phones in the past. Why would you worry that they won't with the '5'? The iPhone 5 is a 'dual transmitter' too from what I'm reading. Capable of CDMA "AND" GSM - no? Or is it some other type of 'dual band' they were talking about in the video?

If you understand plastic well enough as you said then you would know the difference between plastic and polycarbonate

Yes but polycarbonate feels much like plastic. So much intact there are numerous articles on how they thought it was plastic.
The average user has no clue what the phone is made of only what it feels like its made of

I really wanna see all the other people interviewed from that jimmy kimmel video! I think all the other people (not shown) who called bullpoop would be a lot funnier!

I can't believe there are people on here using a skit from a late night comedy talk show as "evidence" people just immediately follow Apple, and are therefore "sheep". These people are not following Apple, they are following the universal urge of not wanting to look like a dumbass on national television.

These people were approached with what they were told was the new iPhone, by a "reporter" with a camera crew in tow. While being nervous as hell, are you really surprised they gave short, generic, safe answers?

Thanks for pointing that out. It was so obvious to me the moment I saw it. They just wanted to say something intelligent. It meant nothing at all. And those who try to draw a conclusion about Apple hype from it are just misguided or themselves have an agenda to pull down the company with the finest product on the market - bar none.
