Brightness is one thing that we often like to adjust depending on our surrounding conditions. For some reason, Apple thought it would be best to hide brightness deep within the Settings application, however volume is easily adjustable from two locations – the multitasking App Switcher and the volume buttons – so why not share one of these locations with brightness?
A new jailbreak tweak called BrightnessIcon by iOS developer Tarek Khalaily makes it possible to switch the function of your volume up and volume down buttons between a volume adjustment method and a brightness adjustment method on demand. This makes it easy to adjust the brightness of your display on the fly. As shown above, the tweak will display a message every time that you switch between making the volume buttons function as a volume adjustment method or a brightness adjustment method.
In addition to changing the function of your volume buttons, the tweak will also intelligently change the heads-up-display (HUD) icon between volume and brightness when you switch between the two functions:
Changing the function of your volume up and volume down buttons is easy. BrightnessIcon adds an application icon to your home screen and tapping on the icon will change the function of your volume buttons. It doesn’t open any application interfaces, but you will get the pop-up notification (as shown in the first image of this review) each time you tap on it and the notification will alternate between the two functions each time you tap on the application icon. The application icon is shown below:
