  • AT&T Reportedly Unlocking On-Contract iPhones with Web Form

For those of you who are AT&T users and have wanted to unlock your iPhone, you might be in luck. The wireless carrier has been reported to hand out free factory unlocks to customers with on-contract iPhones. Requesting an unlock through AT&Tís web form seems to have produced good results for a number of iPhone owners. The folks over at Ars Technica have heard the following from AT&T customers (Ars poster lunarobverse) who received free clean factory unlocks while on contract:

I got this even though Iím 10 months into my 2 year contract. When I upgrade to the iPhone 5 next week, Iíll still have to pay the ETF but itíll make selling my old iPhone (or handing it down to an iPhone-less friend) much easier.
After other users reported trying to call in and getting their iPhone 4S unlocked, many said customer representatives told them the service could not be offered until after they had paid the subsidy. This leads to the conclusion that potential unlockers will have better luck getting through to AT&T by using their web form instead. According to AT&Tís Seth Bloom:

The only requirements are that a customerís account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.
If your application to receive an unlock is granted by AT&T, youíll be sent a confirmation number requesting you to restore your iPhone in iTunes. While the device is being restored, youíll see a message that your iPhone has successfully been unlocked on AT&Tís end. Aside from getting an unlock under the table, itís usually quite difficult to make a carrier unlock your iPhone before the contract expires so this news might come in handy to many. At the very least, you can try to get your iPhone unlocked to sell it for more before the next-gen iPhone is announced on September 12th. See if the method works for you and report back to us with your results.

that is a good question, does this affect any of us that still any of the old data plans, i personally still have a 2gb plan and i'd rather stay with that than have to upgrade to 3gb because of this, when in the end if i go over 2gb they'll just cut my speed down to Edge.

I did this last week on my wife's phone as well as mine. My contract doesn't end til the 24th hers doesnt end til mid October. The lady I talked to at customer service was more than informative on this subject. After restoring an the phone booted I got " congratulations your phone is unlocked" message in iTunes.

I have another question too, it says the account needs to be in good standings, but does that mean it have to have 0 balance or can it have the regular monthly balance but before the due date?

Yes, you can jailbreak, you will never lose the unlock.

Most networks in the uk will unlock a iPhone no mater how long contract has for a fee norm £10-£15! And u can make that back a couple of times over when selling it! Lol

If you used SAM to get the unlock ticket before, make sure to deactivate your phone using SAM prior to connect to Itunes.
Were these 2 4s yours? and how long did it take them to do this?

Why are you restoring? Just use redsn0w's "Deactivate" option and your unlock will go through and you don't need to do anything else - your iPhone and jailbreak remain intact. I just had this done to my iPhone 4 the day my 2-year contract was up, last month. Worked like a charm.

Does this unlock require a restore? Will it work on an iPhone 4S that is currently jailbroken (without restoring it)?

OK, while waiting for my response from AT&T, I dl'd Redsnow for Mac. Seems to be the correct version for an i4. Opened it, but see no way to "deactivate." (I jailbroke using Greenpoison when it was released.) Can someone lay out the process to do this without a restore or a sim from a different company? Step by step?

      Thanks.

Does T-Mobile use micro-SIMs, yet? If not, you can always just cut it! I did it with an AT&T SIM and it worked flawlessly!

Well...I decided to give this a shot for my 64GB ip4S. We'll see what happens!

I also want to do this for my wife's phone when she gets home, even though I bought her a 16GB ip4S from someone on Craigslist several months ago.

I didn't have to wait for her to get home!

I opened an Info.plist file from a Backup of her phone to find the IMEI # and submitted the request a few minutes ago!

Well, after more checking (thanks for the link) it looks like A, I would need to actually run Redsnow in jailbreak mode to access that setting (Jailbreak>deactivate) and B, the newest Redsnow is ONLY for the i4S. Since my phone is already jailbroken under Greenpoison, AND it is an i4, looks like a restore is in my future, followed by putting everything back on it afterwards. Couple or three hours and it should be fine.

So you were able to unlock it without another microsim? Just hit deactivate in redsn0w?

I used the same sim I have had since July 2010.
