  • Apple Releases OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 to the Public

    Apple sent out OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 to developers recently and after the course of testing, the update is now available to the public from the Software Update option under the  (Apple) menu button on the Menu Bar. As promised by Apple, links from the Software Update function now launch in the Mac App Store (above) instead of through a Software Update application like it once did in Mac OS X Lion.

    Unlike some updates through the Mac App Store, the update to OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 will not require you to re-download the entire file and install it; instead it is just a small update sized at a few megabytes (about 7MB for us) that will over-write your existing operating system. The update will require a system restart after you download and install it, so be sure to save your work before you restart your computer. Even though OS X Mountain Lion is capable of auto-saving your work, it won't always do so at opportune times, so it's a good idea to do this manually too.

    So what’s new in the update for Apple’s new Mac operating system? Nothing huge – mainly bug fixes and improvements.
    • A problem that caused Migration System to crash has been resolved
    • Compatibility with Microsoft Exchange servers has been improved in the Mail application
    • An issue where playing audio through a Thunderbolt display would not work properly has also been addressed
    • An issue where iMessages would not send in the new Messages application for Mac has been fixed
    • A problem that occurred when trying to connect to SMB servers that had long names has now been resolved
    • An issue has been addressed that may cause the computer to become unresponsive when using Pinyin input

    Since OS X Mountain Lion is available in the Mac App Store, users that have not upgraded to the newer operating system yet will now be able to download OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 when downloading it for the first time (a 4.05GB download priced at $19.99). For anyone that has already purchased OS X Mountain Lion, the update is free and should only take a few minutes to Install depending on your internet connection.

      this better help safari. I have been experiencing more "crashes" then on any other OS in recent memory. Any I alone on this issue?

      Glad they addressed some Messages bugs. That's been bothering me the most lately.

      Update was quick and easy!

      Ive gotten to feddup with safari. I have her a chance i must say. I was on the phone with apple explaining how i could run MS word, itunes, final cut and motion yet if i have open safari the whole computer comes to a crawl and i need to force quit safari then the computer jumps back to normal. This doenst happen to ever page i go to but jus any with flash or html5... 0_o trying explaining that to an apple rep. anyways ended up using chrome and love it.. switch to it on all my devices. they even have a cool mode where you can see any tabs opened on any of your devices just by being signed in.

      My battery levels (MBPw/R) seem to be much higher. Even while doing the first TM backup after this install, it showed north of 9 hours (compared to just under 4 previously). Here's what it shows on battery, when the backup was finished. If I get anywhere near this with real-world use, I'll be thrilled.

      I still remember how Apple 'fixed' the signal strength bars on the iPhone. If this fix is anything like that, I wouldn't hold my breath...

      The new way updates are presented (compared to SL) is really stupid. Before pressing "update" there is no way to figure the size of the download!?

      anyone else having issues with wifi taking a really long time to connect? wasn't like this before i upgrade to mountain lion.

      My Wi-Fi is taking the same amount of time to connect as it took in previous versions.

      Not at all. Wifi connects between one and five seconds or so every time I open my laptop.

      Works ok on my iMac. I, too, hate the new update process (it pops open App Store, which just seems.... wrong). Safari works for me ever since I reinstalled it on 10.7 using a standalone updater- before that it crashed ten times a day. Seems relatively fine on 10.8, so far. Won't keep a password for one of my sites since the Safari update came out, though, and 8.1 did not fix that. Mail seems a bit strange on 10.8 (and .1 has not fixed things). Doesn't fetch reliably, and crashes if I hit the red button before it completely loads after I open the window for the first time. No problem with Messages. Gotta say 10.4 and 10.5 were the best of the OS X iterations (I started with 10.0.3). Now it seems like the more they "fix" things, the less intuitive and the more clunky the OS gets. And the more things break. I have an iPad and an iPhone and several iPods. They are fine, but I have no need for my computer OS to emulate how they interface. I really think Apple is headed in the wrong direction here.

      I absolutely love how much closer all my devices are to operating similarly. And as every other company is doing the same with their devices, I believe that overall consumers want seamless integration between devices.

      Exactly, which is why I'll report back after a day of battery use... to see if they indeed fixed the battery life or just moved the finish line.

      I am not sure if I updated or not but when I click on about this Mac, it still says 10.8. And when I click on Software update, it says no update available.

      btw I did receive and update notification earlier but I accidently clicked on something else because I was in class at that time.

      WHAT THE !(#$# My battery decreased from 7 hours lion to 4 hours 10.8 ML to now 2 and half n hour on 10.8.1. Wtf !
