  • Don't Keep Your iPad in the Sun... or in the Refrigerator

As summertime looms large around the corner, thousands of new iPad owners are likely gearing up for many a day at the beach or at an outdoor cafe enjoying a cold drink and whatever cool content is being pumped out from their tablet. But as we've already learned from those who have taken their iPad outside, the device could very well malfunction if exposed to too much sunlight.

Overheating has joined the list of initial problems punctuating the iPad's first full week of release. From word yesterday of the iPad having difficultly obtaining a Wi-Fi connection to the internet, to the latest news of iPads boiling in the sun, the iPad's earliest days of life have certainly not been without a glitch. Nonetheless, as with any laptop or portable mobile device, the possibility of an overheated meltdown is always present. And the iPad is simply not above the unpleasant reality that holds true for many similar devices.

Of course, should you experience a shut down or screen prompt that your tablet is overheating, no one is suggesting that you follow the humorous example of PC Magazine editor Zach Honig. Honig stuck his device in the fridge when his iPad revealed its forthcoming heat-stroke. So if you see the warning screen that reads: "iPad needs to cool down before you can use it," don't jam your device between the cold cuts and Sunny D, okay?

If you're curious or haven't already discovered this interesting little fact, the iPad's operating temperature is 32 to 95 F (0 to 35 C) while its non-operating temperature is -4 to 113 F (-20 to 45 C). It should be noted, however, that several folks were simply using their iPads in relatively cool environments when "overheating" issues occurred. Honig, for example, was in 70 weather when his iPad began to overheat - a situation that leads some to speculate that there could be internal temperature problems for the iPad as well.

I have had an iphone for two years now, and it has never overheated on me. I've kept it on (screen literaly on) for hours in the sun and its never given me a bit of trouble.
Whoever said "people always find a way to complain about a product, no matter how good it is" , this over heating issue (if it is as bad a the article says) is major. 70 degrees? thats everyones home temperature, if it over heats their, where the hell are you going to use it?
Ipad is k, second gen def gonna be better. Hopefully a webcam. I NEED A WEB CAM BEFORE I BUY THIS.

@s4mb4 iPhones and iPods don't overheat quickly OR start smoking, and if there WERE to be an article about that happening to iPhones/iTouches, that'd be OLD news!!!

      ditto.

I live in Utah and it gets over a 100 in the summer, my iphones have never had this issue.

These guys must be leaving them in the sun until they are melting or something.

I can't imagine this thing would survive too long in the summers out here. We get close to 120 by August.

Hitman needs to use some of his avatar....the forum was opened to discuss the overheating issues of the iPad.....ANOTHER issue 4 days after release. It's a forum so people can post their opinions....if you don't want that then just read a newspaper website to get your info.

I can see this happening if using in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Becase like all glass, it retains heat. But I doubt on a hot day you will be in direct sunlight using your iPad. I mean the glare alone would make me find some shade ;-)

Although I agree with you, all the ipad is an itouch crap is annoying already.....but there is no argument that the ipad is a bigger iphone. A better example would've been a desktop and laptop. You cant lug around a desktop to jobsites and what not to do calculations....hence the netbook or laptop. The ipad shares alot of the same features and uses as an iphone, just on a screen that's 7" bigger. It's honestly just a cool looking device that people want to have. I mean at the end of the day, what created apples popularness now.....their laptops and ipods appearing in main stream media. They slap a nice package and interface on things and it sells. I believe they revolutionized the smartphone industry and the MP3 player industry.....but other than that its a bunch of nice packages with a sexy interface.

and if i see cool jailbreak features popping up down the line, then I might jump on an ipad once a new model comes out

Because we can actually USE our phones outside without the damn things overheating? Got it?

The ipad overheats at 70F - got that?

Lol I put my computer's hard drive in the freezer once because it was too hot. It got condensation inside it, and never worked again. Don't put your ipad in the freezer...

Same, I'm in Utah and I've never had a problem with overheating with any of my iPhones or iPods.

It is not a oversized iPhone... unless you bought one you will never know what it is like..

The sun is not good for anything nor anyone.... cars can over heat, appliances, our tech toys and we even over heat. Its part of life! The hole key is to use what we learned about the sun and warm temperatures... use precaution!

I would never want to use my toys out in the sun anyway! I keep my toys away from water, heat and the sun...
