Similar to the trend that occurs every year, resale prices of the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 will start falling at a higher rate due to rumors of the next-generation iPhone making its debut in less than a month. Since the new iPhone is likely to have a larger screen, thinner design, support 4G LTE networks, and not be what many consider to be a small incremental upgrade, many people are planning on making the purchase once Apple announces and releases the device. This in turn means that a lot of older iPhones are either on the market now or will be in the near future.
Both Gazelle and NextWorth are two popular sites that specialize in electronic gadget repurchases and tend to be good indicators of the general trend of iPhone resale prices. Below you can find two graphs that show information regarding resale prices of the iPhone 4S back when the iPhone 4S was announced:

Based on the information, right now might be the best time to sell your iPhone if you plan on making the purchase. According to Gazelle’s Chief Gadget Officer, Anthony Scarsella:
That precipitous decline in trade-in prices for the iPhone 4S hasn't occurred quite yet, Gazelle's Chief Gadget Officer Anthony Scarsella said in a telephone interview: A 16GB AT&T iPhone 4S in good condition still fetches $277 on Gazelle, or more than enough to defray the initial cost of buying a 16GB AT&T iPhone 5 when it becomes available next month.
[...]
Scarsella assumes that the bottom will fall out of these inflated iPhone prices near the beginning of September, or about two weeks before Apple's iPhone event and three weeks before the actual release; that's in line with when prices started falling last year.

There seem to be variations depending on your carrier and color of the device but overall, it appears that Gazelle is the better option to sell on. You might be able to snag a better deal for your iPhone on eBay or Craigslist if you are willing to deal with potential buyers on either. This brings us to the main questions: Are you buying the next-generation iPhone? If so, when do you plan on selling your current phone?
