Although it isn't news in the least to report that Apple retains a commanding chunk of the total tablet market today, it is news when this market share expands to reach new all-time highs amidst a flurry of competition in the product category.
On Tuesday, iSuppli reported that the iPad accounted for a staggering 70 percent of all tablets shipped in the second quarter of 2012. But, as the firm pointed out in its revelation, this dominant posturing was established before the launch of Google's hotly anticipated Nexus 7 tablet.
All told, here are how the numbers from today's top tablet manufacturers shake out:
- Apple: 69.6 percent share
- Samsung: 9.2 percent share
- Amazon: 4.2 percent share
- AsusTek: 2.8 percent share
- Barnes & Noble: 1.9 percent share
- Other: 12.3 percent share
Although a number of major tablet offerings - like the Windows Slate - are forthcoming, with Apple shipping seven out of every 10 tablets in the second quarter, it's unlikely that Apple will lose it's top-dog standing among top tablet shippers any time soon.
