With Apple's 6th generation iPhone now just weeks away from launch, the rumor mill is sputtering with new details about what Apple and its retail partners will do with regard to current generation iPhone pricing.
As the next-gen device looms large, All Things D is drawing attention to how Target has just begun selling the 16 GB AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4S for just $179 with contract. If that's not an indication that a refresh is imminent, consider Best Buy lowering the 8GB iPhone 4 to a mere $49.99.
The latest price cuts join the recent decision by Sprint to sell the iPhone 4S for $149, a full $50 lower than the original fall 2011 release price. In response to the slashed prices, Apple is said to be matching prices beneath the radar when customers make the request.
Although Apple hasn't confirmed anything just yet, it is now widely expected that Apple will reveal the new iPhone at a grand media event during the week of September 9th.
