  • Gmail for iOS Updated with Imperative New Features

If for some reason you prefer to not use the Mail app on your iOS device and are a fan of Gmail, then you are probably aware that there’s an app for it! The app has quite a messy history as it launched in such a broken state that it had to be pulled from the App Store. Upon relaunching, it was pushed out without push notifications, which is seemingly a big oversight in an iOS email client. After that Gmail finally received push notifications but then the app felt a little clunky overall.

This is exactly where Gmail version 1.3 comes in and Google is saying that the latest update to their official Gmail app for iOS is trying to fix everything. According to the search giant, the new version makes a bunch of changes under the hood to improve animation, scrolling, and responsiveness; all of which are things that should help solve the clunky feeling. It even allows you to save attachments, a feature that should have been included all along. Google describes the update as the following:

You’ll notice that many events in the app are just a little bit faster and smoother. Buttons respond to presses a little more quickly, scrolling is smoother and new views transition faster. With this update, we tried to make it a little better with every touch.

We’ve also added one popularly requested feature – when viewing a picture attachment, you can now use a long press (touch and hold) to save it to your photo library.
For those of you who are interested in trying the updated version out, you can do so by clicking the link below:

Why anyone would want this is beyond me. I've been receiving mail from my Gmail account on my iphone since 2007, along with 4 other email accounts. I can't imagine having a stand-alone app just for Gmail.

For that matter, I will never understand why anyone would want to use the webmail version of Gmail. I've had a Gmail account since 2004, and I've NEVER seen a targeted ad, because I use a client app.

      ^ that

... and for those with limited data keep in mind that web mail app loads a lot more data than native iOS Mail app. Those graphics in web-mail app are downloaded just about every time you open the app.

I also for the life of me do not understand why anyone goes with any other mail client app vs the iOS Mail app

Until there is feature parity with Sparrow, the Gmail for iOS app will be useless. Still no multi account support? Psshhh

They do but they bought the developers of sparrow which are the people that have most likely pushed this update...
