This is supposed to be the year of the Zombie Apocalypse, right? Well, if that's something you're actually looking forward to, then perhaps you'll be pleased to learn that the zombie rampage has already begun - at least in Apple's App Store.
Based on the findings of a recent study (and, apparently, this was a study worth doing), the App Store is now home to more than 650,000 iOS apps. Here's the crazy part... about 400,000 of them are so-called “zombie” apps. What is a zombie app, you ask? It's a mobile app that's off the radar - not readily visible to App Store visitors and, as a result, practically never downloaded by anyone.
“The reality is there are only a couple of thousand apps that really make some kind of downloads,” says Christian Henschel, CEO of Adeven, the company that spearheaded the study. “This is based on Apple’s closed system — it’s tough to discover those kinds of apps. You don’t have proper search, so the only way to discover new apps is through the top listing.”
Although the Apple App Store has seen some thirty billion downloads in the last four years, just imagine what that number might look like if more apps had equal billing - or at least a better shot at being discovered.
