  • Are Zombies Plaguing Apple's App Store?

This is supposed to be the year of the Zombie Apocalypse, right? Well, if that's something you're actually looking forward to, then perhaps you'll be pleased to learn that the zombie rampage has already begun - at least in Apple's App Store.

Based on the findings of a recent study (and, apparently, this was a study worth doing), the App Store is now home to more than 650,000 iOS apps. Here's the crazy part... about 400,000 of them are so-called “zombie” apps. What is a zombie app, you ask? It's a mobile app that's off the radar - not readily visible to App Store visitors and, as a result, practically never downloaded by anyone.

“The reality is there are only a couple of thousand apps that really make some kind of downloads,” says Christian Henschel, CEO of Adeven, the company that spearheaded the study. “This is based on Apple’s closed system — it’s tough to discover those kinds of apps. You don’t have proper search, so the only way to discover new apps is through the top listing.”

Although the Apple App Store has seen some thirty billion downloads in the last four years, just imagine what that number might look like if more apps had equal billing - or at least a better shot at being discovered.

Another reason could be that many people want an app for their business, that either only targets local people, or even employees (The enterprise program won't let you in without 500 employees minimum)

Why is this the first that I'm hearing about this year being the "year of the Zombie Apocalypse?"

You're telling us that you haven't heard of any of the 10+ zombie/cannibal/crazy/bathsalt stories in the past few months? People have been going haywire.

As for the "zombie apps," I agree, so many of them don't even break the surface.

Why does Apple have a "closed system?" it's not fair for many of the app developers who works hard to bring their apps to market.

Why would apps not be visible in the AppStore? They were submitted for a reason, not just to sit there and collect virtual dust.

Apparently the AppStore has more apps than it can handle, I think it's time for Apple to redesign the AppStore. When most people look for new apps they don't use Google, they use the app store.
