With yesterday’s release of OS X Mountain Lion as a digital download for $19.99 in the Mac App Store, Apple also released a free update to Safari (dubbed Safari 6) for Mac OS X Lion users. The updated version of Safari already comes packed into OS X Mountain Lion, so OS X Mountain Lion newcomers did not need to download the updated version of Apple’s native Web browser like Mac OS X Lion users had to.
Along with all of the new features that came packed into Safari 6, which we highlighted for you yesterday, Apple appears to have chosen to remove the RSS subscription button. This button would allow users to subscribe to Web pages and be able to view the RSS feed to the site in their default RSS reader for their Mac, such as Reeder, a popular RSS reader that costs $4.99 in the Mac App Store.
For anyone that misses this feature on his or her Mac computer, Safari 6 can be reintroduced with the RSS subscription button by installing a simple Safari add-on. Mac OS X developer Daniel Jalkut is the creator of the add-on, which can be downloaded for free from this link.
Daniel explains on his blog that the extension will re-add the subscription to RSS feed button to the Safari browser interface. It looks just like any other button on the Web browser’s interface, so it won’t be some ugly button that you won’t want to use. Daniel also explains that the add-on is considered to be of “beta quality” and that the add-on will come with no developer support, making the add-on a take-it-or-leave-it choice for Safari 6 users.
So far we have tried the extension with ModMyi’s Web site and some others and the button has worked successfully. Feel free to give it a try.
