  • iPad Apps Begin Appearing, Then Disappear

Having begun accepting submissions for iPad apps a week ago, titles have begun appearing on iTunes Preview, though they're not yet available for download. Apparently, developers are renaming iPad versions of their apps with an “HD” or “XL” suffix to distinguish the larger-format versions from existing iPhone and iPod touch compatible apps. The listings were quickly pulled, but the apps appeared mostly to be games redesigned for the new device.

Apple had sent an email out to devs last week, notifying them that iPad app submissions were being accepted. The deadline for apps to be considered by the April 3rd launch of the iPad was set at 5PM California time tomorrow. Apparently, the turnaround - at least for resized apps that had already been accepted in 320 x 480 mode - was short: PadGadget noticed yesterday that some apps were appearing in "HD" versions, but only on the iTunes Preview website. Clicking around a little more, they found a slew of apps with HD and XL suffixes, but clicking on the Download link causes an error that says that “the item you’ve requested is not currently available in the US store.”

The links are no longer visible on iTunes Preview, but the apps PadGadget had found apparently were predominantly game reformats, with HD versions of titles like Flight Control, Plants vs Zombies, Worms, and Labyrinth 2 appearing in the lists. Of course, it's possible that many more "universal" apps that are compatible with both the iPhone/iPod and the iPad may be released without a special designation, so the range of apps may be far greater than what had been uncovered.

I chose to buy a Macbook instead of the iPad, but I will be excited about seeing the reviews and opinions from the ipad fanboys.

Why will you be excited? If they are fanboys then you already know what they think. What does buying a Macbook have to do with an iPad? I bought a sofa the other day instead of a chair

Dude 1st of all the processor is on steroids compared to your ipod,

second think of the gaming capabilities on this thing ( onlive app anyone?),

and third... SO WHAT? WHAT IS WRONG WITH A HUGE IPOD TOUCH?! A screen this size takes so many restrictions away form developers, ranging from how much content can be shown on the screen to how many buttons the fps can have. This thing is going to replace the textbook, magazine, newspaper, gameboy/psp, ereader, and the net book. If you have an ipod touch, that's great; but anyone in the market for any of the things i just listed is going to jump at the iPad. Have you seen the latest prediction for sales of the iPad this year? THEY ARE IN THE MILLIONS. Lastly, watch the keynote again, look at where apple places this device: between the iphone and the macbook. Having all three is possibly redundant, but anyone with either 1 or none of these three apple devices is very likely to bite.

First of all - you need to calm down. Secondly, what's wrong is that it offered absolutely nothing new but a larger screen and 3G capabilities. I can do it all with my phone. Third, the processor is different because they were both released at different times. If Apple wants to stay in the competitive game, they should release the next iPhone with at least a 1Ghz processor. The iPod touch should not trail behind.

I'm so tired or hearing about ipad news! It's a big useless ipod touch (until it's jailbroken). I think I'll wait for 3rd gen ipad that actually has a decent amount of storage for $500!
