  • Apple Working to Remove Artificial Limit iOS 6 App Limit

A small snafu present in the current developer edition of iOS 6 restricts the total number of apps users can install on their iDevices.

The number is insanely high. Users with 500 apps installed will begin to noticeably slow down, and engage in auto-reboots, while those who have as many as 1,000 apps will find their device not booting at all. Apparently the high threshold was of little concern to Apple, especially when considering how many people actually have between 500 and 1,000 apps installed.

However, the Mid Atlantic Consulting (MAC) made the point that if Apple expects devices like the iPhone to replace gaming consoles, televisions, and other devices iOS should allow users to install an unlimited number of apps. MAC cited the late Steve Jobsí claim that only limit on the number of apps was the number of folders and apps per folder. Apple has already reportedly agreed to provide a fix for the App restriction in the next version of iOS 6.

New reports have surfaced that there might not in fact be a virtual limit on the number of apps users can install on their devices, and that the report itself may have been an isolated incident. MAC claims they confirmed the test on four difference iDevices including both the iPad and iPhone. The theoretical maximum for the number of installed apps on a single device spans 11 home pages, with 2,160 apps. However, users can install more applications and launch them from the devices search function, meaning a potentially unlimited number of apps can be installed granted the space is available.

The obvious question in all of this: does anyone actually own 500 apps let alone 1,000?

I got about 100. I have noticed a little of a slow down but that could be caused by the 40 something Cydia tweaks I'm running also. I use a iPod Touch 4g on 5.0

They should also work on removing the 12 limit apps-in-folders amount.

My guess is that someone is going to take this as a challenge and dl as many apps as possible. And I can recall how early iPhones had a limit to apps that would show up on the springboard and in folders, although the search function was also a way to access those that wouldn't fit. You'd think, however, that the size of each app would, cumulatively, eventually get to be too much for the device- especially big games. I probably have fifty apps, if you count the Apple apps I never use (like Stocks), the Apple apps I have found other apps to replace, either from the iTunes store or Cydia (like dJay for music and biteSMS for messages), and the apps I rarely use like FindMyPhone. Obviously, cost is also a factor. But I suppose if someone was willing to pirate apps and just helter-skelter put them on their device, it could build up into the hundreds. A thousand, you'd have to use search just to finds apps.

I have 418. No slowdown is evident. Yes, I'm cleaning some off, I really only use a few dozen with any consistency.

I agree there! Yes that would be nice and get rid of some folders, example i have 3 games folders and 2 entertainment, and 2 lifestyle. Be nice to consolidate into a single folder and free up 4 spots.

hah I don't think I've downloaded a total of 500 apps since getting my phone. If the cutoff number here was something lower like 100, I'd say Apple should fix it. But if you're installing 500 apps, you probably deserve a daily crash or 2.

Tell that to the 25th billionth App contest winner that got a $10K iTunes gift card.

Over the course of my iDevice career, I've probably downloaded 500+ apps. But I only keep about 50 on my phone at a time. I have 153 on my iPad.

I think the amount you can install already is a lot. not everyone is going to install everything. even the 64gb systems would have issues holding that many if you got every app that was a couple mb's or less... half of the decent one are 10mb up to almost 1g in games.

I used to download lots of apps 100-200 but then I realized I had to many options and couldnt decide which to play then eventually respringing took longer and longer and I deleted like 3/5ths off them. I mostly have online games now and then big games like racing and infinity blade but I have a lot of utility apps.

Folder enhancer or infinifolders both allow you to clean up your folders.

I easily own over 1500 apps, but I only have about 175 installed.

I track app sales with the appshopper app and grab the good free ones, been doing it for years.

I own more than 500 apps but I would never put that many on my device all at once. Or maybe I would if I had enough storage space - it would be like owning a mini app store in my pocket, which is useful on an iPod without cell functionality.
