Apple Hires Former AMD Chip Architect
Apple appears to have acquired former AMD chip architect John Bruno, as Bruno now lists himself as “System Architect at Apple” on his Linkedin profile.
While Bruno’s move to Apple hasn’t been officially announced, SemiAccurate spotted the change Wednesday. Bruno is well-known for his part in the development of AMD’s Trinity Accelerated Processing Unit. Apple likely acquired Bruno for his expertise in chip architecture to help with Apple’s efforts to design faster, energy-saving mobile processors for use in the company’s iDevices.
Last year AMD let Bruno and a number of other high-level SoC engineers amidst a rash of job cuts. Bruno, despite his expertise, hasn’t been attached to any major companies or projects until SemiAccurate spotted his updated Linkedin profile.
Hopefully Bruno’s expertise finds its way into Apple’s products sooner than later, perhaps putting pressure on other chip manufacturers to innovate in the mobile market and provide the performance and battery life customers need.
