  • Microsoft Courier a Dual-Screen iPad?

Although Bill Gates recently stated that there was nothing about the iPad that made him wish Microsoft had come up with a tablet of their own first, more details have emerged about a secret Microsoft project that could reveal the opposite of what Gates has been suggesting in the media. Indeed, it now appears that Microsoft wants a device of its own to rival the iPad. And more details are surfacing about when the product may surface and what it will look like.

From the first rumblings of its existence last fall to the new slate of rumors surroundings its look and potential release date, it now appears that the Microsoft Courier will be built to compete with the iPad. Sources have been cited in reports indicating that the device will serve as a digital journal customized for ultimate convenience, accessibility, and portability.

The dual-screen device is reportedly under an inch thick, weighs only a pound, and, instead of Windows 7, the Courier is believed to be built on Tegra 2 and will run on the same operating system as the ZuneHD. Naturally, the pen-based interface suggests the tablet will be very writing and reading-centric.

Although the latest rumor is that the Courier will turn up before the holiday shopping season commences this year, nothing has been formally confirmed. But it makes sense that Microsoft would wait to see if the iPad flies or falters before determining how to best push or promote their "iPad killer."

Look interesting to anyone? If you're wondering about the price... so are we. No word yet on that either.

I can't judge until I tried both of them. They both look promising.

Just the fact that it folds shut and protects it's own screens makes it far ahead if the iPad vor basic value added features. Plus, for reading & writing, the traditional book form factor makes a lot more sense to me.

Obviously, the iPad interface has already been demoed live, but if those concept videos on engadget holds true for the actual OS experience, then the iPad will be dead in the water with it's played out iPhone OS.

You do know you have the option of not using that extra options, the good thing is they let you to choose.
I am going to assume it will allow flash since Microsoft OS do not have problem with it, that alone get me want to get this.

Courier has been known way before the iPad was even announced, only difference is that it hasn't entered production yet.

You do realize the courrier has been public before the ipad right?
EDIT: LOL noodleboy beat me to it. I should learn to read.

Here is a decent vid. It would imply that it is touch and useful with a pen as well.

What makes it more useful? I don't know much of this so called device.

EDIT: Never mind just saw the video link from above. That looks pretty good.

Especially for the wife as she is still in college. It would completely dominate the market if it's anything like the prototypes and pictures that have been released. I really hope MS releases it as I myself have been waiting for a long time. On top hopefully they will have a cheaper 3G alternative and plan for it.
How do you know if it's a failure if you haven't even tried it yet?

I'm lovin the Courier. Both screens are capacitive... Virtual keyboard on one screen, whatever the hell you want on the other. Awesome. Hopefully it has a G-Sensor in it as well.

This is the netbook replacement that will truly matter.

To all those claiming they stole the iPad idea, I seem to remember this being announced long before the iPad ever was.

now that is awesome... from the videos it looks like it has a camera unlike the ipad... but the os is still stripped... I know I won't be getting an ipad because I already have it (aka iPhone) but this Courier from M$ sure looks impressive... I wonder what the exact specs will be

I've been in love with the Courier since it was announced last year. It is a beautiful OS and very intuitive.

So has there been RECENT news regarding this product? I was getting worried it was starting to become vaporware. Last I heard that it was still in the prototype phase and is no where near production ready; however, one report stated that the EARLIEST it would be released was Summer 2010.

Also, Microsoft would be developing the hardware of this product themselves - taking a playbook from their production of the XBOX360s. So even though it is not production ready, once it is it should be reaching consumers pretty quickly as Microsoft won't need the middle man for production.

I REALLY hope this product becomes a reality.

Oh what a joke. See microsuck leading from behind again. Will this go with their iTunes copycat store mentioned all those years ago? All these microsuck fanboys creaming their jeans over a concept video. Where's the product? When's the launch? What's the OS? Can we have some bench mark tests against Kindle, eReader and iPad? It's one thing to have an idea, but it's another thing to mass produce it and deliver it across the world. Microsuck don't have the best track record with hardware development, (zune, what a world beater). Well, before you drool over your keyboards, lets see it, test it and look at what's under the hood. BTW, I don't read my books, magazines or newspapers with a stylus. So fanboys, do your best and talk this hamster up. I won't be getting ANY of them! A half brave man can talk about what he's going to do, but it takes a really brave man to just do it. Your serve Billy boy! Never had an original thought in his life.

So you fanboys gunna give it the same scrutiny (criticism) as the iPad? Hmmm?

Kroo, did you even read the previous posts? It's already been well established that Microsoft is NOT copying Apple, and it may in fact be the other way around.

Always can count on Kroo to go hysterical for Apple, believes only company that has any innovation of any sort is Apple. An Apple fanatic even Jobes can't match.
