All week, MMi has brought you coverage of the ongoing saga related to Apple's controversial removal of its products from the EPEAT environmental rating program. Following San Francisco officials pledging to pluck all Apple products in response to Apple's decision, no shortage of critics have piled on to give Apple another black-eye on its environmental record.
But today, following a substantial backlash from the environmental community, Apple has decided to once again list all of its eligible products as EPEAT green certified. And the announcement received high-profile placement on the Apple website in the form of a letter from Bob Mansfield, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.
"We’ve recently heard from many loyal Apple customers who were disappointed to learn that we had removed our products from the EPEAT rating system," Mansfield wrote. "I recognize that this was a mistake. Starting today, all eligible Apple products are back on EPEAT."
"Our relationship with EPEAT has become stronger as a result of this experience, and we look forward to working with EPEAT as their rating system and the underlying IEEE 1680.1 standard evolve," he added. "Our team at Apple is dedicated to designing products that everyone can be proud to own and use."
So will this effort by Apple work to silence critics and keep the peace in San Francisco? For now at least, Apple appears to have made the right move.
