  • Apple to Combat Jailbreaking with iOS 4.3.1 Update, Says BGR

A slight iOS "tweak" is expected to be rolled out from Apple within the next two weeks, says a new report from BGR. iOS 4.3.1 for the iPhone and iPad could be available around the 1st of April. The update will supposedly address minor bugs and security holes. The "minor bug fixes," however, allude to a fix that would patch a vulnerability that enabled the freshly unveiled iPad 2 to be jailbroken so quickly after its release just ten short days ago.

Also on tap for iOS 4.3.1 are:
    • Baseband updates for the 3GS and 1st generation iPad
    • Fixed memory hang that results in memory corruption when reading large files from USIM filesystem
    • Fixed problem with NTLM authentication in apps and on websites
    • Fixed issue with the Springboard and 3rd party apps not recognizing the gyroscope on the iPad 2
Few other details about the rumored iOS update are known, particularly with regard to Apple possibly bringing its updated OS to Verizon iPhone's 4. Only weeks old itself, iOS 4.3 serves up a host of improvements, ranging from more secure in-app purchase controls and beefed-up Safari Web browser, to personal hotspots for tethering a 3G data connection over Wi-Fi and support for AirPlay in third-party apps. Such a prompt update to 4.3.1 likely suggests a knee-jerk reaction on the part of Apple to patch the vulnerabilities that continue to be exploited for jailbreaking purposes.

In order for apple to completely block jailbreaking, they'd have to make a whole new product running on completely different hardware and software.

I do not update at all unless the update is jailbroken, stable, and has features that are worth it. Other than that I'm fine with my lovely 4.2.1

Let's face it. If apple really wanted to stop JB, would they let a forum that basically revolves around it be up on their app store?

No. I think they know that more sales come form JB.

It's like the government and smoking. They impose loads of legislations to control it but won't ban it because it will loose them too much money!

Face it everyone. Apple likes this game of cat-and-mouse. It gives them more publicity, and
they feed of it. Without this cat-and-mouse game Apple really has nothing
      to really do.

Yup, apple finally figured out how to stop people from jailbreaking their equipment. Keep releasing updates more frequently. All the hackers that make the jailbreaks are all scared and wont' release it now. Quit being a bunch of pussies and release it. If you're so good, you'll find a way around it.

Spending money by frequently releasing minute and pointless updates is not a very cost-effective way to combat jailbreaking. At least the devs are receiving donations for their effort. What is Apple getting out of it? Other than the recent decision deeming jailbreaking legal....I haven't seen anything else on my local or national news in regards to Apple and Jailbreakers. So you cant really say they're getting a boat load of publicity from it. And if they are it's just making them look like the bad guy.

Then again Apple is like a billion dollar company that has money and time
      to make patches, and updates,

I can guarantee you there are MILLIONS more that have jailed phones than there are jailbroken. I never said anything else. I still stand by my words, if they stopped jailbreaking, iPhones would still be popular. I love being able to jailbreak my phone, but we are the minority.

From what I've read from various sources, there are a LOT of problems with 4.3 (no personal experience however, JB 4.2.1 is treating me quite well). The battery drain issue seems pretty prevalent among other glitches. Kind of interested in faster Safari, but I much prefer to use iCab Mobile anyways so that I can spoof a desktop browser and avoid mobile sites which I think are generally annoying. No Nitro there, and not a whole lot of interest in using Safari more often.

Hopefully the battery drain, etc. will also be addressed in 4.3.1. Otherwise I don't plan on updating until a more stable iOS version/untethered JB is released.

I'd chuck mine along with all the paid apps on it for Android phone or Win7 phone if it weren't for jailbreak. I'd spread all my used phone around as well, I've gone through 2x 2G, 1x 3G, 1 3GS and 2x 4. That is 6 users on iPhone that would not be on an iPhone if it were not for jailbreak, not to mention all the friends I jailbreak for that would not own one if it were not for jailbreak...

You are just not in jailbreak community often enough to know the facts, every time Apple do an update there was a jailbreak soon after just not released. Reason given is the iOS update released was not significant enough for people to upgrade, and for these developement teams releasing the jailbreak and have Apple patch the hole and have to find another hole is a waste of their time. It was better to tell people not to upgrade and release the jailbreak later when there is a more significant upgrade on the iOS. They proved that they had the jailbreak with youtube videos just so the unbelievers can get off their back.
I have yet to see Apple win against hackers, nobody can win against hackers. All you can do is fill in 1 hole at a time.

BTW for people who think constant release of iOS would stop hackers, guess what if iOS gets released so often people stop updating their device. Who wants to wait for iOS to download then more time for it to be put onto the phone and then sync all files back over, just for iOS that adds absolutely no features so they can block jailbreak? I sure as hell would not upgrade until a trusted developement team has jailbreak out before I would upgrade my device. Hell I am still running on iOS 4.2

Anyone who is currently jail-broken on 4.2.1 (or even just 4.x below 4.3), especially if you rely on having your phone unlocked (via ultrasn0w or so), there really is no need to upgrade. If you want wifi/hot-spot tethering, use MyWi or PDAnet, which is in fact quite safe if you aren't moving huge amounts of data all the time, which is most a problem on Unlimited Data accounts.) Other than that, there really isn't any incentive to going to 4.3.

Also, it looks quite obvious that in 4.3 they have much better methods of tracking tethering separating when using the PHS feature in 4.3, though it's unclear if it actually effects MyWi and such.

Again, if you're jail-broken (especially if unlocked), and you're on 4.2.1, and it is performing well (and if you need tethering and use MyWi or similar), you aren't anything. People need to stop upgrading just for the sake of upgrading.

Ok, but why would you not want to take advantage of some of the essential tweaks made, that apple should of already had in there.

Because it's far too featureless without it and it's far too much of a hassle owning an iPhone and having to deal with Crapple and all their BS like having to use iTunes for everything. Couldn't have just simply implemented some kinda "drag and drop" of music, photos, videos, etc. No have to use lame iTunes which is so annoying! Or what about when we couldn't even have MMS WITHOUT JAILBREAKING? I had $20 nokia cell phones that could send picture messages yet a STOCK iPhone couldn't? LMAO what a joke! So to me there has to be some kinda bonus of owning an iPhone which to me is having a Jailbreak. Otherwise I just own an Android Phone that has been rooted instead.

Well and that's because most of the people who buy Crapple products are nothing but fanboys/fangirls who buy things simply based on the fact that they "look cool" or because "everyone else has one". It's the same squares who "update their device just because there is an update" yet they don't even know what's there. Then they are on the internet whining about how they "lost their jailbreak" and now their phone sucks and how do they get it back etc etc. Also just look at all the squares who bought an iFad, I mean iPad, and are now feeding Crapple again this year with the iFad2. Stupid thing is nothing but a giant iPod and the only changes this year are that it now comes with a front and rear camera, a little faster, and a tad smaller! LMAO might as well call it the iFad3GS All the crap that should have came on the first iFad. But Crapple is SMART because they know that they average person that buys their products are squares and simple people.

I can't begin to explain how many times I been out at the clubs or somewhere else and had either handed someone my phone to exchange numbers or had someone see me playing on my phone and been like "hey how did you get your phone to look like that" or "how are you able to facetime without wifi" or "how did you disable that annoying stupid multitasking like that?" or "what do u mean you can tether your phone without a data plan?" etc etc etc. Plus I run into lots of people who still have iPhone 3GS' and I'll ask how come they don't get the iPhone 4 and most just say that they got suckered in by the hype and don't even like their iPhone enough to upgrade.

You guys can get butt hurt all you want. I'm just tellin it like it is from my own personal experiences. I like my iPhone but ONLY because I can hack it out and do what I WANT with it. Not just what Crapple says I can do. So yes without a Jailbreak me personally the iPhone is CRAP! I would sell it and move on to a rooted Android Phone plain and simple.

One way for Apple to stop jailbreaking would be to pay people $50,000 for each exploit found. We'll see who on the dev teams will sell out. Let's say there are 20 exploits found. It would cost Apple only $1 million. That's chump change.

You people crack me up! The reports say Apple sold up to HALF OF A MILLION iPad 2s in ONE WEEKEND in ONE COUNTRY and yet you kids still love to ***** that it's just a way for Apple to make money off of fanboys. How many does the company need to sell in order for you to admit that they have created a true game changer?

I still don't understand how the argument of it's "nothing but a giant iPod" is an insult. It IS A GIANT IPOD. A faster, more powerful iPod with a 9.7" screen!

A tad smaller? It's 33% smaller and 15% lighter! What are you wanting? The damn thing is thinner than the iPhone 4, the thinnest smartphone on the market (at the time of it's release at least, I don't know if any thinner have came out since).

A little faster? The thing SCREAMS compared to the original model! Hell, it's scores are on par with a 2005 PowerMac G4.

Some people sure just love to go against the grain for absolutely no reason whatsoever. No worries, keep staying bitter while I'm using my iPad 2 more and more each day.
