  • Apple to Combat Jailbreaking with iOS 4.3.1 Update, Says BGR

A slight iOS "tweak" is expected to be rolled out from Apple within the next two weeks, says a new report from BGR. iOS 4.3.1 for the iPhone and iPad could be available around the 1st of April. The update will supposedly address minor bugs and security holes. The "minor bug fixes," however, allude to a fix that would patch a vulnerability that enabled the freshly unveiled iPad 2 to be jailbroken so quickly after its release just ten short days ago.

Also on tap for iOS 4.3.1 are:
    • Baseband updates for the 3GS and 1st generation iPad
    • Fixed memory hang that results in memory corruption when reading large files from USIM filesystem
    • Fixed problem with NTLM authentication in apps and on websites
    • Fixed issue with the Springboard and 3rd party apps not recognizing the gyroscope on the iPad 2
Few other details about the rumored iOS update are known, particularly with regard to Apple possibly bringing its updated OS to Verizon iPhone's 4. Only weeks old itself, iOS 4.3 serves up a host of improvements, ranging from more secure in-app purchase controls and beefed-up Safari Web browser, to personal hotspots for tethering a 3G data connection over Wi-Fi and support for AirPlay in third-party apps. Such a prompt update to 4.3.1 likely suggests a knee-jerk reaction on the part of Apple to patch the vulnerabilities that continue to be exploited for jailbreaking purposes.

I believe only 8 or 9 percent of iPhones are actually jailbroken

No there's already tethered JB that are out for 4.3...
      Using pwnage for Macs
      And Sn0wbreeze for windows.

It's that kind of thinking that would discourage some of the few devs that the jailbreaking Community actually has. The way you are putting it is that we have a bunch of people that don't have their own lives and families will always take their valuable time and find an exploit for you. That may not always be the case and you should really show a little more respect for the people who let you piggyback on this journey of jailbreaking if you will. Yes there probably will be more exploits found but don't shrug it off as if there wasn't a cost for it even if you didn't have to pay the price.

That's just my opinion and take it how you want it.

I wasn't an apple fan at all until I purchased an iPad and a buddy jailbroke it for me, since then I've purchased iPod touch and iPhone 4 all which are JB. I could not imagine having my apple products not JB. But each person has their own feelings on the subject. JB or not I love apples products, however it's just 100 x's better JB.

      Nicely said, Sir.

I am tired reading some of those posts which only whine about 4.3 jailbreaking. I know we all have been waiting and it does suck, but what can you do? So ... relax people. There's always time for everything.

question I've owned plenty of jb iPhones but I'm buying my first iPad, the iPad 2. I'm curious if I were to luck out in getting mine shipped in the next two weeks I'm assuming it'll still have 4.3 on it correct?

It is a fantastic phone. But ya gotta admit jailbreaking adds some much needed little extras. I'm with you though, I'd own it either way. :-)

well i for one would not have an iphone without a JB because i had to JB it to use it on t-mo, i got the old BB on iphone4 & as much as i'm an apple fanboy with their macbook pro's and other apple products including the iphone. i had the old 2g that i had to open and hardwire to jb & unlock lol. i would not switch to at&t from tmobile for the iphone. i would just root an android phone. I'm sure there are allot of people that are with me but its not a large enough number for apple to care (at least i dont think) now with the upcoming merger we have no choice and there may not even be much need to unlock. i know there are other countries that may benefit from the unlock but the less people that need/want the unlock the fewer people willing to do something for nothing. especially with geohot having other problems there is one less person on the scene (maybe). now for the JB question. if apple breaks JB apps with every update (which they can) and devs have to constantly fix their cydia apps to work more people will give up and just work on legit apps for the app store and have less problems. so for those that say there will always be a hole or if man made it man can break it, just remember if there is a will there's a way but if there is no will... well you know what i'm getting to.

well i feel that apple will always be like this because its not that big of a percentage of jailbreakers out there from what i under stand. So patching up holes and updating is not a big deal if you don't jailbreak, i mean it doesnt affect anything for you. I would think that they just do this because of the pirating, they want it to stop

      The title is wrong.
How can crApple block jailbreaks if they dont know what they are? The jailbreak isn't released so they cant block anything.
And there will ALWAYS be a jailbreak. Just give it time.
Looks like the jailbreak for 4.3 will now come out after 4.3.1 and it wont be long after. I give it the week after 4.3.1 is released.

I like the way the word "crApple" is becoming a used word. I think I started it when I got my first iPhone 2G and I've seen it used on a few forums now.

      100% agree with you.

I don't update till the jailbreak is out. I'm still on 4.2.1 as there is no jailbreak for 4.3 out yet.

I tried it when I went from 3.2.2 to 4.2 and it was crap so I went back to 3.2.2 and waited for the jailbreak for 4.2(1) then finally updated but I still lost a lot of useful features.
Backgrounder for 3.2.2 is a lot better than native multitasking,
SwirlyMMS for iPad3G gives it SMS/MMS support which crApple refuse,
The USB now refuses to support a lot of USB sticks,
4.2.1 keeps running out of memory, 3.2.2 never ran out of memory.

What is so good with 4.3 anyway? It's just the base for the iPad2 so there is really no useful features so no good reason to upgrade anyway. Gladly waiting for the jailbreak then all the cydia apps I use to be updated too then I'll think about updating.

I hope baseband .14 or .15 is in there somewhere.
      Just my 2 cents

As for apple products, they rule. JB just makes them better

Semi-tethered means a phone will boot into a non-jailbroken state if no exploit is run from an external device and boot into a jailbroken state if an exploit is run. There's no such thing as a phone booting tethered some of the time and untethered the rest of the time. If that was the case, all you'd need to do was reboot the phone every time you ran into one of the tethered boots.

Also, that video shows nothing. It's just you talking. How is that supposed to be proof of a jailbreak?

Even if you showed a phone jailbroken on 4.3, you'd still not produced any proof of a jailbreak as the limera1n exploit can already do that by itself (I know that hasn't been released, but it's possible with the available code to make it).

This means the hackers (who are already crippled with the 4.3 unlock and jailbreak situation) will further delay, if AT ALL THEY find an exploit....Agree with me or not folks, but in this cat and mouse game between hackers and apple...Apple has won the battle already...There hasn't been an unlock for 6 months counting now....these hackers are able to do **** about it...

We have 2 exploits. That is not me, but he is part of my devteam. We can show you all the files, pwned custom bundles, exploits, loader just ask.

The exploits are userland jailbreaks which are easily patched by Apple and a waste. Think jailbreak.me.

Once they find a bootrom exploit, its over for any patches apple could do until the next hardware revision.

How about DFU exploits? What category would that fit into, and how
easily is that category of exploits patched i.e hardware, firmware?

If the ability to jailbreak IOS stops then I will just stay with whatever jailbroken iPhone that I have. Before apple came along with IOS how many people actually updated their phones. To me the economics are simple for apple, no jailbreak = no more of my money.

If you look at the successful companies that ended up in trouble it almost always of their own doing. Keep in mind Apple almost went out of business because of a disconnect with their customers. Of course Apple's view is we are lucky to be their customers (same attitude that cost them before), that may have worked when there wasn't another choice but Android phones are improving all the time.
