  • Smart Cover Hacked to Work (sort of) on Original iPad

If you're among those who aren't willing to spring for the new iPad 2 just yet but would still like to enjoy Apple's new Smart Covers, you're in luck. As it turns out, the guys over at Three Russians Used A Pencil have effectively hacked the Smart Cover (sort of) to make it work with the original iPad (sort of).

Understandably, the hack required the procurement of 3/8 x 3/16 x 1/32 magnets - which, unfortunately, aren't the least expensive components to buy. Throw in some super glue and a bit of strategic planning and component placement, and you've got a brand new Smart Cover concealing the original Apple tablet. To see the modified Smart Cover in action, check out the brief video above.

Where the hack falls short is that the modified Smart Cover cannot wake up your iPad or, conversely, put it to sleep. What's more, the stand functionality is far from rock solid. But, all told, the Smart Cover can be used on your first generation iPad. And, perhaps from afar, someone might actually think you have the iPad 2

if you stick a microwave to a car, is that a hack?
same thing, also the ipad 2 lets you remove it and look normal, but this show ugly in removable magnets on the side.

whattt? no sleep - wake function ??

Yet another of the "there's no need for this to be done but LOOK - we DID it! WOW" pointless things.

Maybe use the ingenuity to build something that can be useful to society, rather than do something so incredibly pointless and... pointless.

As for the cover color, I got sucked in and bought the Blue. It at least HAD some color to it and didn't look like a granny smith apple on acid.

I'd have picked up the red one, but I wasn't about to spend $70 on a leather version of this "case".

Pointless if it doesn't wake and make it go sleep.
They should have been included with an iPad 2 anyway seeing as you get the magnetic covers with BB phones.

I wish apple would of had the option to screw the cover in place so it'd be secure! I can't tell ya how many times I almost dropped my new iPad 2

Thats cool and all, but this is directed at Messany, you don't hack a piece of fabric and magnets.....you hack electronic platforms like iOS and Windows....

Funny.........So you spend 40.00 for a toilet bowl inspired cover for the front of your ipad. So now.......the back of your ipad gets hammered till no end with scratches and dings!
There is no greater APPLE related lesson than the fact that the products resale value is greater than all others.
So........it has to be fully protected to ensure greatest resale value.
Ditch the gadgety toilet seat cover and just put it in a full surround
      cover.
Yes, Apple products are slick but NEVER put the resale value of your product in the design.
Glass cellphones, one sided covers, stainless steel bands.......cool but after you've been bilked of thousands by your cell providers, you'll move heaven and earth to get back as much as possible when reselling.

More like, from afar, someone might actually think you're dumb enough to buy a Smart Cover. Then, from "aclose," someone might realize how sad you are for sticking freaking magnets to your iPad to make people think you have the iPad 2.
