  • Chrome for iOS Already the No. 1 Downloaded Free App in the App Store

Turns out the pent-up demand amongst iOS users for a mobile version of Chrome is enormous as the app has already skyrocketed to the top of the free download chart in the app store.

Google released the long-awaited Chrome for iOS earlier this week to generally positive reviews. The browser currently maintains a 4.5 star rating in the App Store. Most users are happy with the interfacing and overall browsing experience, but complaints about the browser’s speed keep coming up.

The reason behind the sluggish Chrome for iOS performance is Apple’s fault as the company will not grant third-party developers access to the Nitro JavaScript engine that powers Safari. Still, the slightly slower performance is a minor annoyance compared to the advantages of syncing tabs, bookmarks, across your desktop and mobile device. The release of iOS 6 will bring iCloud syncing of Safari tabs across devices, but the relevance of this for desktop users is questionable considering Chrome is by far the most popular non-mobile browser.

Chrome with the “BrowserChooser” jailbreak app is as close to a Safari replacement as iOS users will likely see. Apple isn’t going to allow third-party developers access to the speedy Nitro JavaScript engine anytime soon, which means Google and other developers need to rely on other features than pure speed to sell their browsers.

Chrome has a browser on iOS but firefox still claims that Apple's restrictions prevent them from making Firefox on iOS.

Firefox can make a browser on iOS, just as Google did with Chrome. The only problem is, it wont be a true browser of their own. Apple has placed severe limitations on other web browsers for iOS. Firefo

Yeah that annoys me how Apple places so many pointless limitations on iOS then they whine about people jailbreaking their software.

EDIT: What annoys me even more is the fact that apple doesn't allow some great apps because of their stupid restrictions yet they allow fake scam apps that steal your money.

Why don't the laws, that require Microsoft to supply links to other browsers in Windows, apply to Apple and iOS?

My pent-up demand remains. I naively thought Chrome on the iPad would be like the PC version, but no. Now I realize all browsers are crippled by iOS and Apple's policies.

Where is a DOJ antitrust lawsuit?

yeah just did a few unofficial speed tests on my iPad 3rd gen. Safari still beats chrome by about a second to every page. Not a jailbroken iPad either. Also, its not truly google’s code i believe. The reason firefox hasn’t made a browser is because to make a web browser in iOS you must use apple safari web kit sdk. Im pretty sure that’s how a Mod on firefox’s website explained it to me.

It's SO much better than safari and the speed is not enough to deter me or others from downloading a much better browser than crapple's mobile safari.

Loving it over Safari. Being able to sync my open pages and bookmarks between my Windows desktop and my iPhone seals the deal for me.

Tomorrows release of Chromizer will make it even better with pull to refresh and fullscreen mode

I am happy with Safari on my iDevices - apart from synching bookmarks , which I don't want to do, what does Chrome offer me? Why should I try it?

Am I the only one that doesn't know?
