  • iPhone 4S Is and Isn't Verizon's Top Selling Smartphone: Who's Right?

Despite being perhaps only twelve to sixteen weeks away from the release of a new 6th generation iPhone, the last-gen model remains the best selling smartphone in the U.S. across the Verizon network today.

According to new published reports this week, the onslaught of competitors in the smartphone space - including a challenge from the much-hyped Motorola Droid Razr Maxx - hasn't phased Apple's iPhone. As of this writing, the iPhone 4S remains Verizon's best selling mobile device.

Of course, that's what Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, says. On the other hand, William Blair's Anil Doradla has a different story to tell.

According to Doradla's channel checks for the June quarter, the iPhone is no longer the No. 1 smartphone at Verizon's retail outlets -- the first time that's happened since the carrier started selling it in February 2011
Doradla says that the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is now Verizon's top selling device for June. So which analyst is right?

It's possible, however, that they are both correct. Walkley based his comment on checks conducted in April and May. Doradla's survey covers June.
"Bottom line," Doradla tells investors, "while we acknowledge the increased competitive landscape from 4G devices (and the iPhone 4S is not 4G), we are not worried [about] Apple conceding its top position in North America any time soon. We believe the anticipated launch of a 4G device from Apple this fall will be an important catalyst for the company as consumers upgrade their phones, and we expect the company to once again maintain its top position at all operators (including Verizon Wireless)."

BREAKING NEWS: iPhone sales are extremely high right after the release of a new model and extremely low right before the release of a new model.

Often, it is quite literally physically painful to read these articles on ModMyi. This entire article is a contradiction of itself....

Wouldn't it be the 7th generation phone coming up because there was a 3GS and 4s.

This is according to the writer who called the next iPhone the 6th gen device. According to what he says:
      3G- 3rd gen
      3Gs- 4th gen
      4- 5th gen
      4s- 6th gen
      5- 7th gen

I personally think the next iPhone will be the 5th generation device but that's just my interpretation and iteration.

What are you taking about? There have been no more and no less than five iPhones released as of today.

3G doesn't stand for 3rd gen iPhone. It was the first iPhone to have 3G wireless tech built into it. That's why it's called iPhone 3G.

Hmmmm. I've owned every iPhone model that Apple has released and yet somehow I never stumbled across an "iPhone 2". So, let's try this again: Original (1), 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S. By my simpleton math, that's 5 generations. The as-of-yet-unnamed iPhone would be the 6th generation.
