Despite being perhaps only twelve to sixteen weeks away from the release of a new 6th generation iPhone, the last-gen model remains the best selling smartphone in the U.S. across the Verizon network today.
According to new published reports this week, the onslaught of competitors in the smartphone space - including a challenge from the much-hyped Motorola Droid Razr Maxx - hasn't phased Apple's iPhone. As of this writing, the iPhone 4S remains Verizon's best selling mobile device.
Of course, that's what Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, says. On the other hand, William Blair's Anil Doradla has a different story to tell.
According to Doradla's channel checks for the June quarter, the iPhone is no longer the No. 1 smartphone at Verizon's retail outlets -- the first time that's happened since the carrier started selling it in February 2011
It's possible, however, that they are both correct. Walkley based his comment on checks conducted in April and May. Doradla's survey covers June.
