Despite being perhaps only twelve to sixteen weeks away from the release of a new 6th generation iPhone, the last-gen model remains the best selling smartphone in the U.S. across the Verizon network today.
According to new published reports this week, the onslaught of competitors in the smartphone space - including a challenge from the much-hyped Motorola Droid Razr Maxx - hasn't phased Apple's iPhone. As of this writing, the iPhone 4S remains Verizon's best selling mobile device.
Of course, that's what Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, says. On the other hand, William Blair's Anil Doradla has a different story to tell.

Doradla says that the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is now Verizon's top selling device for June. So which analyst is right?According to Doradla's channel checks for the June quarter, the iPhone is no longer the No. 1 smartphone at Verizon's retail outlets -- the first time that's happened since the carrier started selling it in February 2011

"Bottom line," Doradla tells investors, "while we acknowledge the increased competitive landscape from 4G devices (and the iPhone 4S is not 4G), we are not worried [about] Apple conceding its top position in North America any time soon. We believe the anticipated launch of a 4G device from Apple this fall will be an important catalyst for the company as consumers upgrade their phones, and we expect the company to once again maintain its top position at all operators (including Verizon Wireless)."It's possible, however, that they are both correct. Walkley based his comment on checks conducted in April and May. Doradla's survey covers June.
