  • iFixit iPad 2 Teardown Reveals Few Surprises

The good people at iFixit have completed their teardown of Apple's new iPad 2. And the broad consensus in response to the tablet's disembowelment is clear. Indeed, there are few surprises to be found beneath the hood of the new iPad 2. As chronicled by the iFixit team in their teardown and subsequent highlight video (see above), the most attention-worthy discoveries of the teardown are largely limited to the dwindling sizes of iPad parts and components.

As we all know, the iPad 2 is thinner and sleeker than its predecessor. What the teardown shows is that the new tablet's glass screen is markedly thinner in particular, a development that similarly lends to the reduced weight of the refreshed tablet. Conversely, only one day removed from the device's launch, it's certainly far too early to adequately assess whether the newer, thinner glass display will prove less durable than the first-gen iPad's display.

In addition to pointing out that globs of glue are used this time around to keep much of the iPad 2 in place, iFixit confirms that the iPad 2 delivers 512 MB of RAM, a dual-core processor that appears to be from Samsung, and the tablet's new battery (a 3.8V, 25 watt-hour unit) represents only a minimal improvement over the first iPad's battery (24.8 watt-hours). Yes, because all of us rip our iPad 2s apart so we really need to know how durable it is if you pry the glass off. Thanks for the useless information nerd girl

The power is there and I am sure this will be a selling point of the iPad 3.
Wait a minute, you mean to tell me the iPad is not 16:9? I haven't even seen one in person but I assumed it was, yet another reason I ask, why would anyone want an iPad?

Any other resolution would require every iPad app to be redesigned (or it'd be aesthetically tacky with blank bars on the edges of apps). Doubling is about the only way to go.

Yes, that was the point. People whined about it being the same resolution.

IT'S NOT REALISTIC FOR THE IPAD 2 TO HAVE A 1536 BY 2048 RESOLUTION AS OF RIGHT NOW.

Again, whoever heavily complained and/or decided not to buy it because it's not 1536 by 2048 really needs to reconsider.
