  • Fake Cydia App Removed from App Store

This past weekend, the App Store had a Cydia knock off, which was a completely bogus app that was falsifying and tricking users into thinking it was the App Store for jailbreak apps and tweaks. The app was a simple-looking game based on the definition of Cydia that was previously explained as the following:

Cydia is actually named after a moth. Cydia pomonella is the scientific name for the “coddling moth,” or what we would most likely recognize as the stereotypical apple worm.
The app didn’t allow you to install any third party packages and just tricked users into thinking they were installing Cydia, the App Store acquired from jailbreaking. The description warned many users but the app managed to fool more people than expected. It previously read:

Cydia funny and popular snake game you may remember from childhood. Its main character – a kind of caterpillar named Cydia. Collect all the apples and pass as many levels as you can.

Pay attention that this application is not related to Cydia Store. If someone has bought this application by mistake please get a refund.
Reviews of the application made it clear that quite a bit of people got tricked into buying this scam app. Most of the reviews are actually negative and Jay “Saurik” Freeman even posted a review which stated the following:

The app previously sold for $0.99 and the developer probably made quite a bit of money before the app was removed. Although some people will try to get their refund, it is likely that many will not do anything about it at all, count their losses, and just move on.

kinda reminds me of the Oprah show...

she could just promote a bucket of mud she swooped off the street and tell her viewers it exfoliates your skin and people be buying it by the buckets

Yea, bet the developer doesn't know what it means to use trademarked names either or the issues it can cause them. Cydia is trademarked and people that use it as a main name for something should beware.

That's always a good point, I honestly think the developer did that on purpose though. The icon even looked like the real thing. People will do anything to make money it seems.

I don't know why Apple allows this app to be on iTunes. It's kinda some game where Apple plays with jailbreak community. Or they all from the same team?

Apple can't check everything that goes on the App Store, they try their best but they can't get to everything realistically. I wouldn't be surprised if the dev of this app got suspended. It was a scam from the start.

kmt. They're too busy blocking useful apps that end up in Cydia they let these dumbass ones get through. People trust Apple too much, act without caution because of a brand, get burnt.

LOL...your comment made me thing of the South Park episode with the Human Cent"iPad"

WHY!? Why doesn't the CentiPad READ!?

      But...on topic...

I honestly think Jay S is gonna have a tough time with any lawsuit he tries to put forth. Apple isn't buddy-buddy with the jailbreak community, and neither are some law makers. I wouldn't be surprised if the Execs at Apple take the side of the "fraudulent" Cydia (game) app just to spite the jailbreak community.

      But...I may be wrong.

Jay doesn't support fraud, piracy, copyright infringement, or anything of that matter. Apple may not like him as much, but I think they'll take his side this time because they hate the same stuff he does. Cydia is copyrighted, I don't blame Jay for filing a lawsuit either. Anyways, I think Apple will help him for once.
