  • Apple Releases GarageBand and iMovie for iPad, Updates iMovie for iPhone 4

As expected with the launch of iOS 4.3, Apple has released iPad-specific versions of its popular applications GarageBand and iMovie. iMovie is now a universal application, that works with the iPad, iPhone 4, and iPod touch 4th generation. It will obviously also work with the iPad 2 upon its release tomorrow.

    New features of iMovie include:
    • Multi-touch editing with iPad
    • Multitrack audio editing
    • Sharing in HD to YouTube, Vimeo, CNN iReport, and Facebook
    • AirPlay support
    • Project Transfers
    • Fade Effects

iMovie is not available for the original iPad. However, many of these are new features work for the iPhone/iPod touch as well, which still seems to run excellently, even without the dual-core chip that the app was specifically designed for with the iPad 2.

The all-new GarageBand app is iPad-only. But we're getting reports that it works flawlessly on the original iPad, which is great news for users who aren't sure they're ready to upgrade.

    Features of GarageBand include:
    • Playing your iPad like a musical instrument, including touch sensitivity.
    • Record your voice
    • Smart Instruments
    • Multi-Track audio editing
    • Use of built-in mixer
    • Sharing via email, add to iTunes on Mac or PC

Both applications are available in the App Store now.

UPDATE: 9to5 Mac is reporting that you can, in fact, install iMovie on the original iPad without a jailbreak. Here's a link to that article.

Thanks for the heads up. I was hoping it would be available today so I can check it out before I get the iPad 2 (hopefully) tomorrow.

Get the app Music Studio. It's on the app store and it's like the same thing as garage band. It worked pretty well on my 2G iPod. It works awesome on my 4G iPod.

I'm looking forward to testing Garage Band. Right now I use Multitrack DAW and I couldn't be happier with it. I've recorded licensing tracks for television shows as well as songs that are for general public consumption and haven't had a single issue at all. If garage band can top Multitrack DAW's ease of use, it will be pretty much flawless.

GarageBand works pretty good on my 1st gen iPad. Didn't have any luck getting iMovie to work though. Predecessors are soon forgotten 

Just downloaded Garageband on my iPad 1 on 4.3 & it works very well. I have no lag & the touch sensitivity is pretty good. I will be playing with this for a long time!.

Ya, GarageBand for the iPad is kinda useless. I dunno, seems kind of gimmicky. I have it and its just not usable. At most, my daughter loves playing on the instruments making noise.

This is when the first gen iPad starts to suck as crApple stop making apps for it and force everyone to get an iPad2.
Even apps that dont need the iPad2 that work fine in iPad1 and crApple refuse to let it work. iMovies is the first app that does this. It works fine on the iPad1 but would crApple let it? noooo, how sucky are they...

iMovies probably works better on the iPad2 due to the increased processing and graphics power. It will be interesting to see how it works on my iPad (IPCU failed on my laptop, having to use the wife's and it seems to have hung).
If it doesn't work very well it would explain why Apple only released it for the iPad2 - and I'm guessing it would be a lot smoother on the 2. Pity I can't afford one but I'm loving my iPad.
