  • Apple Pulls Messages for Mac From the Site

Apple has officially ripped Messages for Mac off of their Web site. The application was offered as a free download while in its beta stage so that all Mac OS X Lion users could see what it was like to be able to iMessages people with other Macs, iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads right from the comfort of their personal Mac computer. Of course, Apple never included a Windows version of the client because it was intended to be an Apple-only messaging platform.

Apple had warned us at the time of releasing the beta that they would be discontinuing it as soon as OS X Mountain Lion went live, as Messages for Mac would come bundled up with OS X Mountain Lion. Yesterday at WWDC 2012, Apple announced that OS X Mountain Lion would be released in July. July is still a good half-month away and OS X Mountain Lion is still in developer preview stages, so Apple seems to have jumped the gun a little bit.

It’s not crystal clear whether or not beta testing went well for Apple or not with Messages for Mac, however it is certain that a lot of people test-driving the application reported a lot of bugginess and unreliability. This raises the question of whether or not Messages for Mac is ready to come bundled with OS X Mountain Lion or not. Then again, Apple knows best, right?

If you want Messages for Mac, buying OS X Mountain Lion will be your only choice because Apple said the beta for Messages for Mac would stop working automatically. It seems to still work for the time being, regardless of the fact that it has been pulled from Apple’s Web site. OS X Mountain Lion will cost $19.99 when released.

Someone could probably port it to Windows, if they were really wanting to. Would take some time, but everything is possible.
