Tim Cook Talks App Store Surge in WWDC Kickoff
We knew Siri would play a major role in WWDC, but who knew that "she" would be the first to speak at the event.
"Hello and welcome to WWDC. I'm Siri, your virtual assistant and today I was asked to warm up the crowd, which should be easy since the high will be 75 degrees."
After a brief warm-up from Siri, Apple chief Tim Cook took the stage at San Francisco's Moscone Center.
"We have a great week planned for you, and some really cool stuff to show you this morning. This is our 23rd WWDC," Cook told the jam-packed audience, "Yes, it's older than many of you are."
The first item on the agenda today was the App Store and its record growth.
"The size and momentum are just phenomenal," Cook said. "We now have over 400 million accounts on the App Store... This is the store with the largest number of accounts with credit cards anywhere on the internet that we're aware of."
According to Cook, the App Store now has 650,000 apps - 225,000 of which are customized to the iPad. "I'm very pleased to announce a new milestone for the app store. Customers have now downlated an astounding 30 billion apps!"
Cook added that more than $5 billion dollars have now been paid to developers.
MMi will keep you posted about all the announcements today at WWDC 2012, including the anticipated introduction of iOS 6.
