  • [Review] Jukebox - A Beautiful Music Widget

Music plays a large part of iOS – unfortunately, the ability to control your Music is limited to what Apple finds sufficient. A new Notification Center widget brings music controls to Notification Center with a great-looking interface. The widget, dubbed Jukebox by iOS developer aricha, can be found in Cydia's ModMyi today for 99˘. You can see the widget in the screenshot example above.

The information shown by the widget includes the length of the song, which is shown in the top right hand corner, the song name, album, and artist. You can also see the album art in the left side of the widget.

By tapping on a small play button in the bottom right hand corner of the widget, you’ll bring up a collapsible iPod controls strip, which includes all of your basic controls including play and pause, next and back, and shuffle and repeat buttons. Swiping on the stripe reveals a Tweet song button, music application shortcut, and volume slider. If you don't reveal the strip, you can use swipe and tap gestures – swiping side to side switches tracks and double-tapping plays or pauses the music. Holding down on the widget launches the Music application.

The unfortunate part about the widget is that is currently doesn’t support third party music applications such as Spotify, Pandora, and Grooveshark. However, support for these applications is over half complete and the developer hopes to have a release ready within a week or two. For now, iOS users will have to use this widget with only the stock iOS Music application.

The widget has no options to configure, however you can enable and disable the widget any time that you like to by simply moving it in and out of Notification Center from the Notifications preferences pane and shown below:

If you listen to a lot of music, this widget could be a good asset to have. It works fully with Dashboard X on all iOS devices.

Anybody know if something like this would conflict with this?
[Review] Music Widget (For Dashboard X)
I'd love to be able to use the widget from this post in my notification center and the one from my link using dashboard x.

Unfortunately that's hard to do at the moment, Apple doesn't provide any means of changing the rating outside of the Music app. I'm looking into adding that at some point to Jukebox though - it's something I really want to have myself.

From looking at the screenshot, I think it's the best one so far. The dashboard x music widget is just too big and the other notification center music widget has too many buttons.

I'm loving it. I'm looking to change/theme the music control buttons with those I use in my music app, lockscreen etc. if I can do that it'll be perfect!
(I don't remember ever rating my mp3 files. I just listen to albums the way the artists recorded them OR shuffle a few playlists I have of certain record labels or genres)

I believe you can theme it already, actually. Just use the bundle ID of Jukebox (that's "com.arichardon.jukebox"), and look at the names of the images in the Jukebox folder (in /System/Library/WeeAppPlugins/Jukebox.bundle), you can pretty easily create a Winterbard them for it just as you would a regular app.

      Thanks
I just worked that out and made a bundle for it (while I'm riding the bus home from work) with the result looking pretty good so far..

Neat timing with the RSS reader

      And shuffle etc..

      1. Get rid of the bottom "control" bar.
      2. Move the Shuffle/Repeat buttons into the album art/song info bar.
      3. Turn the album art/song info into a page control so you can swipe left/right between songs.
      4. Add a tap gesture to the entire bar to pause/unpause the music.

Could anyone kindly testify how this compares to Music Controls Pro (of which I enjoy the swiping features of), or if it's possible to use them in conjunction? (There appear to be no conflicts listed for MC Pro* or Jukebox. [ *Other than "com.phoenix.pandoracontrols" ] ) It should be possible since one could turn off the player controls in the Notication Center for MC Pro and use the ones from Jukebox, allowing the MC Pro swipes to still work. I will give this a try sometime, I'm just wondering if someone already has, though. Thanks.

[EDIT: Apologies for the duplicate posts, I some how got stuck in a moderation cue but did not realize it right away since the message saying so only appeared for half a second immediately after submitting a post. Oddly enough it was only happening in this particular thread.]

Some WHY'S to the items above:
      1 Isn't the control bar collapsible (hide/unhide)?
2 What if the title of the song is long? don't we need that space for it?
3 I thought if the control bar is hidden it said gestures can be used for controls already?
      4 Meh!

How exactly did you change the background of your notification center? I really like that leathery look.

Isn't it possible to just hook into the function for that?

Coming from the "Developer" who ignores feedback on twitter, despite stating in the bottom of OpenNotifier that 'for support or feature suggestions please mention blah or email blah'... or the fabulous creator of StatusTweak.. that lets you know changes are being applied to your device by completely locking it up for a minute or three and then reloading the springboard.. every time.

      1. Try the widget/read the review. It toggles.
      2. Why? Are they in the way down there next to the other music controls?
      3. Try the widget/read the review. It does that.

I mean really who blurts out a big bolded list of (what are they? suggestions or orders?) like that? Especially when you obviously haven't used the widget or read the review?

I'm running a few. The main theme with the icons is Jaku by William Szylveszter. It's on Cydia for three bucks and has an enormous community here.

The NC is a mix of NCClear by Ryan Kelly and a few homemade bits.

Statusbar is a mix of Saif by Cody Grant and a bunch of my own.
