  • Apple to Release iOS 4.3 Alongside iPad 2

Apple announced today at their iPad event that the iPad 2 would ship with a new version of iOS, iOS 4.3. The update builds on software additions found in previous versions of iOS 4.

Apple highlighted many new features in the upcoming software update. Safari performance will be improved enhanced using the "Nitro JavaScript engine." Apple's Scott Forstall add's that Safari's performance will be "significantly increased" using the new engine. Also included in iOS 4.3 is iTunes Home Sharing, allowing a user to stream their entire iTunes library to their iDevice via wi-fi. As expected, AirPlay will now be available for all applications, including video and audio played within Safari.

For iPad, iOS 4.3 will allow users to choose a preference for their switch, they can use it for mute or as a rotation lock. As expected, the GSM iPhone 4 will also get the personal hotspot feature, which first appeared on the CDMA iPhone 4 in iOS 4.2.6.

iOS 4.3 will also be available for the original iPad, iPhone 4 (GSM version), iPhone 3Gs and iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation, and will ship with the iPad 2 on March 11.

Update: Apologies, we left the iPhone 3Gs off this list originally, it has been added to the list of compatible devices in this post.

There already on the works since 4.3 beta was released to developers. There just waiting for apple to release the completed version first that way apple won't patch anything up before the iOS 4.3 version was fully completed. So a JB and unlocks are already under way.

Goddammit, that Home Sharing feature is the only thing I wanted for my old iTouch 2 - so I don't have to keep using ZumoCast to stream music from the PC.

Sigh, maybe it's for the best, zumo uses 1/2 the memory that iTunes would, which I'd have to leave open all the time anyway. Just would have been nice to have one less server plugin running all the time. Or if Air Video would get off their asses and add audio to the app.

Here's to hoping we can get a smooth jailbreak and an updated ultrasn0w...

Been waiting since 4.0.1 for something that would make me jump. Appreciate all the devs do.

Anyone think my iPhone 3G on 4.2.1 bb 5.15.04 will be unlockable with the newest unlock? (I know that won't be getting 4.3) just wondering about the bb. I hope I don't get left in the cold :/

I find that the biggest enigma is that it will only be for GSM iPhones, I don't see a reason for it not to be available to Verizon customers

I hope this means future devices will allow photos to be taken using the volume buttons. Apple's excuse that dual uses may confuse consumers is no longer valid.
I doubt that they will change their stance on that. The only confusion is why Apple took away the rotational lock switch and made it a mute button when holding the volume button for a second does that already is the real mystery. I'll be glad to have that option back. The multiple touch method I have to use now is very inconvenient.

Any reason why? That seems odd for Apple to do that.

Not sure why. Just read that somewhere. It said a few features that 4.3 is bring is already included in the current Verizon firmware. But then they are missing out on several other items coming.

Yeah, that's what is odd, do they maybe plan to release a version for VZ later on? I can't imagine them leaving VZ out of those things after all they went through, and I know they don't want to tick Verizon off

Yes I know I, like many others was stupid to buy an iPhone 4 off ebay, only to find out it wasn't factory unlocked, but it was 100 cheaper than buying it from anywhere in the UK. At least now that 4.3 has dropped I can finally use my iPhone as a phone and not just a more expensive iPod Touch.....well I can as soon as Ultrasn0w or the baseband downgrader gets released.
