  • [Review] Music Widget (For Dashboard X)

If you checked out our review of Dashboard X, the new iOS widget management platform for iOS by iOS developer Ori Kadosh, then take a peek at another free Dashboard X-exclusive widget, which is also by Ori Kadosh. The new widget is Music Widget and it can be used to control your music from your home screen and even display the album artwork to brighten up your home screen.

The music widget is exclusively for Dashboard X, so it wonít work with Notification Center the way that iOSí widgets do. Conversely, most if not all Notification Center widgets will work with Dashboard X. The music widget's controls are simple Ė offering three music control buttons, you can move forward and back through your songs and also pause and play music. Apart from the album artwork, the widget also shows you the name of the song at the bottom of the widget in white text.

Whatís great about this Dashboard X widget is that itís not bogged down to simply the Music application that Apple loads onto every iOS device. Instead, you can freely use any music application you want such as Spotify, Pandora, or Grooveshark as some examples. The only restriction it has is requiring iOS 5. Like all Dashboard X widgets, the widget works on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

The widget has no options to configure, however you can enable and disable the widget at any time by deleting it from the home screen and then holding down on an empty spot on the home screen to bring up the widget-enabling interface again.

Graphically, the widget looks very nice on the home screen. It includes a semi-transparent border around the album artworks and since Dashboard X auto-aligns the widgets to the center of the screen, you donít have to worry about it appearing on the screen awkwardly. Since the widget is free, if you like listening to music and you own Dashboard X, then this widget is a great addition to the platform and seems to work perfectly.

Does this have some sort of conflict with the 'Switchy' tweak??

Might be a stupid question but this can do per page then?

It's showing all 3 tags on my 3GS, Don't know if that's how it should be.

And the widget is too big for me, it's taking to much space.

Everytime I try to download something from the "addons Dashboard x" it comes up with a http/1.1 403 forbidden error. Anyone know what to do about this?

Seems to. It uninstalls switchy automatically when you install it. Reinstalling switchy uninstalls Music Widget. I switched to MusicCenter. Smaller and no conflict with switchy.

You know, I was getting this same issue with several things in Cydia after my first JB attempt. The JB appeared to work, but I remember thinking that the Cydia file subsystem install (upon first launching Cydia) seemed to go too fast. I got several http errors when trying to install things, and other things like winterboard or homespringpage caused my springboard to not launch (black screen on unlock) and it wouldn't crash to safemode, but just back to my JB'd lockscreen. Sometimes refreshing from the updates tab would get rid of the errors. I downloaded Absinthe 2.01 and did a restore in iTunes, then a backup restore, then the JB, and now Cydia seems to be working fine.
